I would define middle class as the range of 25% - 75% of income earners. I do not know what that translates to dollar numbers. Median income +/- 25%.
ETA: I found some numbers.
The overall average household income in 2015 was $67,565. I would call middle class to be $50,674 to $84,456. Sounds low, but middle class isn't as easy of a life as it was in the past.

I think that says more about just how many people we have in this country who make retarded amounts of money...
...and more importantly, just how many we have that live off of those of us who are paying taxes.

if you make less than me... you’re “poor”
If you make more than me... you’re “rich”
If you make about what I make... you're “middle class”
There’s nothing better than people making $120k/yr that tell you the top 10% are “rich” but they are “middle class”

$75k-$225k, but that depends on a lot of other factors.

Cost of Living is really important to consider. You can’t use a simple dollar figure due to that.

A family making 120K a year is middle class.

I define it pretty broadly - between the $50k range of household income, up to about $400k.
Maybe I'm old and I should punch the bottom up to about $60k or so, but I'll stand by $50k to $400k.
(In case it's not clear, I'm saying $50k is the bottom edge of lower middle class and $400k is at the upper end of upper middle class - much below $50k is working poor. I set the upper edge of upper middle class pretty high because you don't really grow out of confiscatory taxation until you're approaching half a million - no shite.)

Notice ... that is just "combined FEDERAL taxes."
That % is a lot fricking higher when you factor in state taxes, local/county taxes, city taxes, sales tax ... tax....tax....tax....tax....tax....tax....tax.
frick a DAMN TAX.

"Comfortable" money in NYC is north of $175k.
If you have kids add $50k.

Wouldn't middle class be by definition the average household income? Which is right around 55k.

$400K is a lot of money in 99% of the country.

It is - but it doesn't make them out of the middle class.
You want to know what that guy's take home is, after Federal, State, FICA, 401K (I know his money, but not now, later) - Medicare, etc. get done with him? Maybe $20k a month. Yeah, that's a lot of money, but it ain't $400k - barely over half that. Don't get blinded by the zeros. Gross income ain't what it used to be.
ETA: To add insult to injury, the crooks in congress are going to come at him for another few points a year, which will come right off the top of all of that.

Sounds low, but middle class isn't as easy of a life as it was in the past.
Houses are getting bigger...
With fewer people in them ...
For most people if they lived with same spending and ammenitites of the 70s.. they’d feel a lot more wealthy.

You need more than 3 terms
People who use the same word to describe a family making $300k per year and a family making $5M a year are insane
