Can we talk about the 56 yard FG?

As much that went right on Sunday I still do not understand the decision to attempt a 56 yard FG up 14 with a little over 9 minutes to go.
I understand if he makes it you go up three scores, but a 56 yarder is not a gimme. If it is 45 or under I try it all day long.
The miss gave the Panthers the ball at their 46 yard line. One play later they were at the Saints' 40. The Saints could have very easily been in a one score game with around 6 minutes to go.

I think in that sitatiuon with the score punt is the call but you know what, what the frick do we all know.

I'm pretty sure Lutz talked SP into letting him give it a shot. You could see him trying to convince him on the sideline.

Just like Allen feels the need to prove that he can pull off zone coverage, Payton is still trying to justify his choice of Lutz.
He doesn't need to; I think we're all on board with Lutz.
Payton keeps making dumb game time decisions.

Down 3, 1:00 left, 1 timeout, 4th & 1.
Do you kick the 56 yarder or do you go for the conversion.
Obviously if the previous 5 attempts were bad or not far enough, you know the choice is to go 4th & 1.
Better to know or test in a game in your favor than the first attempt be one in that scenario.

he had the leg on it... it was just wide
was it a small chance FG? sure
but I'd be more against the call if he had come up short
let's appreciate the fact that we have a kicker who has the leg from 55+ while facing a cross wind (Garic said there was a slight breeze blowing across the field from the Panthers sideline to the Saints sideline right before the kick)

I agree. As good of a FG kicker as Lutz is, Morestead is a better punter. Also, the D was playing lights out. Pin 'em deep and make 'em go 90-95 yards. Wasn't the right call, but it worked out.

Payton was rewarding Lutz because he stood for the anthem.

You are really annoying

the chances of getting 3 yards was better than making a 56 yarder. If they weren't going to punt, that was the better option. I don't think it was a smart decision.

The outcome shouldn't determine wether it was a good decision. If a basketball player made a half court shot in the middle of the 1st quarter it doesn't make it a good decision to take the shot.

I really don't have a problem with it.

A kick on 4th down from 56 yards away and a half court shot for no apparent reason are not one in the same. 50+ yard field goal attempts are the norm for NFL level keep kickers. Even though I thought Payton should’ve punted there, the fg attempt made since.

Stupid decision to go for the FG in that situation.
But spayton has made many boneheaded ingame decisions.
Fans give him a pass because he is an "offensive genius".

I agree with OP - ill advised long FG attempt by stupid Jim Caldwell was the most underrated aspect in our Super Bowl win.
Everybody talks about the onside kickoff, but the missed FG was at least as key.
Missed long FG's are essentially an onside kick.

I actually buy into this. I think a coach has to defer to his players sometimes (remember the Brees QB sneak to score a TD before the half at Miami in 2009?).
