Drew Brees, who is heading into the final year of his contract with the New Orleans Saints, has a little-known, rarely used clause in his deal that prohibits the team from using its franchise tag on him, league sources told ESPN.
Brees could still re-sign with New Orleans, a city he says he loves and will always be connected to, but the team cannot block him from leaving.
The 38-year-old Brees, who led the NFL in passing yards for the seventh time with 5,208 last season, said during the summer that he is not focused on his contract status. The Saints open their season on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.
"Right now, [no discussions are taking place]. I don't expect them to. I don't really desire them to," Brees said in July. "I just want to play football and help this team win."
Last year, under similar circumstances, Brees and the Saints worked out a one-year, $24.25 million extension just a few days before the regular-season opener so that he wouldn't become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

I thought we had already known this.

Why can't we franchise Drew if need be?
I always thought this was our fall back plan.

Yeah, I don't think the Saints would be using the franchise tag on Brees regardless.

Brees isn't going anywhere. He will retire a Saint

John Unitas will always be a Colt.
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice will always be 49ers
Jim Taylor will always be a Packer
Earl Campbell will always be an Oiler

I think he retires a Saint.
Who is the highest paid QB in the league?
A guy who has less playoff wins than Tim Tebow.

Information from ESPN's Mike Triplett was used in this report.
Recycled media crap by an ESPN writer designed to be a team and coach distraction that occurs right before all Saints games by ESPN.

Even if they could, the tag would be ridiculously expensive. Yeah, no.

And we should let deal expire and move on both of us gracefully. I spoke with a former WR from our SB run that stated Brees arm has been shot and should've been gone years ago. (My proof is Pro Bowl last year the best WR in the game, no pass rush and Brees still had HOF WR coming back to the ball or stopping route to catch ball ie DUCKS) Time to start a new era

This was reported when he signed the deal last year. Literally last year's news.

Ugh, I dislike ESPN & all their dramatic sensationalism but Triplett is a legit writer who covered the Saints for years for the Times Picayune prior to going to ESPN. He is respected & connected inside the organization probably more than any other writer. The only thing being reported here is the clause in Brees' contract. It's not like the article said they expect Brees leave after the season. There's no reason to be butt hurt over this article.

Did you miss the part where he led the league in passing last season? Jesus, you're stupid.

Adam SchefterESPN Senior Writer is the author of the article and not Triplett. The article ends by citing older sourced material by Triplett.
Nothing wrong with any earlier article written on this subject by Triplett. Schefter is recycling another writer's very old story.
Say hi to Triplett nextime he soothes your butt hurt self for obviously not reading the article, unless your man crush extends to Schefter.

National media will be pushing this story all season especially if we don't do well
They would cream themselves if they can push him to the Jets next year

really, little-known ????
this has been talked about for 2 years straight in about 50 different threads
you have to have become a saints fan for the first time yesterday not to know all about this

I read the article inside the link asswipe. There's plenty of other reasons to hate ESPN but this isn't one of them. Your obsession with the 4 letter network is unhealthy. Maybe you should consider some psychological treatment. Lashing out over an article that implies nothing at all is not normal human behavior. Subhuman behavior but not human.
