Lack of shorter throws over the middle

What is the belief, as to why LSU does not throw slants, crossing routes, or in-routes over the middle of the field? Are we trying to hide the "secret slant play" or is Etling too weak and inaccurate to challenge the middle of the defense? All of our passes are deep or to the sideline. Not a complaint, as the passing has obviously improved, but I am just curious if anyone has a rational reasoning that I am missing.

You don't know which takes more arm strength, do you?

It's a dangerous pass play and why use it if guice is breaking 10+ yard runs and etling is dropping dimes 20 yards down the field?

It can be dangerous, but i think its a necessary risk

Nearly every deep ball was underthrown, but that wasn't the point. Most offenses use crossing/ slants and we don't. Just curious.

What? Lots of deep balls in the money last night

The secret play book is still on lock down. Expect Canada to unleash the tigers next week....

I think it was what the D gave us. Safeties biting on PA so Etling went with what he saw. On one of those deep ones I recall seeing someone wide open on a slant but he didn't see him or decided to go deep.
I think Canada is known for WR screens, etc, so I expect that to be a part of our game soon but I guess no reason to call those plays if not needed as we may have had plenty of execution in practice and no need to use in these preseason games.

Even Etling said that he underthrew several in his post game. Underthrowing is good sometimes though. This really wasn't the question to begin with, though.

It's a a good question and I'm not too sure. One theory I have is that since we are a traditionally run heavy team, the defenses stack the box which clogs the middle of the field, making those throws extra risky. If the defense stacks, there's generally one less safety so the deep passes and sideline passes are open.

That makes sense. I was glad to see Brennan throw over the middle. Would have scored if the receiver holds on.

You will get plenty of downvotes for questioning the obvious. I would like to see us work the middle of the field within 7-12 yards.

What you are talking about is a lack of high % completion throws. Short slants, quick outs, bubble screens.
Those pass plays that keep the defense honest and small pickups. I have wondered the same and I'm sure Canada will work them in as the season goes on.

Because eventually you're going to have to do it.

Danny needs to quit lying in post game interviews then hahaha. Our receivers made some great plays on severely underthrown balls last night. It happens, but I'm not really complaining about Etling. Just wondering about only using a few parts off the field for passing.

Definitely a couple of underthrown deep balls, it was nice to actually see our receivers go up and make a play though.

The pass that Brennan threw that Sullivan should've caught was over the middle.

Exactly and it should give Danny more confidence
