Livingston Parish / Denham Springs.
We moved out of BR for the same reasons. I have one kid there now (junior) making straight As, The other is a sophomore at LSU...also straight As, & majoring in Chem Engineering. He got a 30 on his ACT when he was a junior at DSHS.

What's the best/some of the best public school/s in the state?
Move to Madisonville, Mandeville or certain parts of Covington. As long as you are in the Mandeville High School or Fontainebleau High School district you will be fine.

Zachary's school district gets high marks regularly. Baton Rouge Magnet is probably the best in the region though.

Yeah, that list is garbage. If looking at #s 8 & 9 doesn't tell you that, I don't know what else you need.
#8 KIPP Renaissance High School
5316 Michoud Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70129

#9 Louisiana School for Math Science and The Arts

In BR, the only public schools I'd send my kids to are the magnet programs. Central, Zachary, Livingston and Ascension are all decent schools if you don't mind living in the burbs

Are there any that can compete with Madison or Ocean Springs, MS?
No. Catholic schools are the only option.

im not sure what you're arguing about. I admitted I was wrong and you were right. Lusher is not the 2nd best public/charter/magnet school in the state.....im not sure what else you want me to say
Let me guess...your kid couldn't get in....right?

In BR/NO, you'll want to go private school. Trust me.
Eta - I know that doesn't answer your question, just a fact.
This topic come sup frequently and these kinds of answers are always the result. There are good public schools in BR and none of our kids were shot, stabbed or had their lunch money stolen. Check out the gifted and talented programs...magnet as well. Our kids had great experiences at BRVPA, BRMHS and McKinley...and all went on to great college careers.

So, this guy is an idiot. In the BR area you have:
- BR High which has better outcomes than the majority of private schools (and the kids have better lives there). It is a magnet school though, so your kids would have to be selected.
- The entire magnet program in BR is excellent.
- Zachary school system - best according to test scores in the state.
- Ascensions schools - not so great but also will be pretty safe for your kids.
- Shenandoah Elem
- Parkview Elem
- Glasgow Elem
If in BR don't listen to these clowns that say you have to feed the pockets of some greedy institutions to get a good education.
In NO it is different. The only good public school I know of is Ben Franklin and it's outstanding. After that, it's all private schools.

Just look at the number of free lunches and you'll know everything you need to know
Posted on 9/4/17 at 10:40 am to jmarto1
Anyone can lie on the app and get free lunches. They don't check that stuff at all.

Consider Dutchtown- one exit past CCL and highland road

And more fresh brand new $280k subdivision houses than you could look at in 6 months

Yeah, Baton Rouge High has a better outcome if you want to turn your kid into a SJW. That school if full of weird kids imo. Full of percings, colored hair, etc... They also have no major sports, so I hope your kid enjoys the preforming arts over Football and Baseball.
And as far as better lives, it's pretty clear that Episcopal, Catholic/St. Joe's, and U-High put out the most successful kids.

May come as news, but diversity is a giod thing and life doesn't revolve around football and baseball!

Might want to do some research...act scores, merit scholars, top-level college admissions, etc.

What defines successful?

If you can afford private school and put them in public school YOU ARE A FOOL! Invest in your kids!!!
