Texas
TAMU
Baylor
Texas Tech
TCU

It's embarrassing. Is the athleticism of Texas HS football overrated? I know the state produces big dudes & QB's but damn they can't play defense over there.

Our 2014 defense was ranked #2 in Defensive S&P

Edit: And in 2008 it was #1 in defensive S&P. #2 in 2009/2010

You can't play uptempo football and score in 2 minutes and expect to have a good defense. It's just not possible.

It doesn't help that they all run these uptempo spread or air raid offenses that really does their defense no favors.

My high school ran a wishbone offense

We sucked though even though we sent a lot of guys to D1

Chizik and Muschamp at Texas?

Those defenses were good enough to get them to the national title game.

Yep

S&P had our 2008 defense as #1. Before anyone says we didn't play anyone, S&P takes into account strength of opponent. Our 2008 defense was loaded. better than our 2009/2010 defenses that played in BCS games... I think out of our starting 11, 7 guys got drafted at some point, including all 3 of our linebackers who each had decent NFL careers. Gave up only 14 against Toby Gerhardt & Harbaugh's Stanford, 7 against a BYU team that had a good defense and scored 59 on UCLA, 13 against the 13-0 Utah team that crushed Alabama, 16 against an undefeated Boise State team. We did allow 35 to Oklahoma, who statistically had the best offense in NCAA history that year, but that was well below their season average at home and Stoops himself admitted after the game they got lucky on a couple of their TDs.

2009 and 2010 we dropped to 2nd in defensive S&P.

you ever heard the saying "pressure creates diamonds"?

When you average 40-50-60 per game, your defense gets the mindset that giving up 20-30-40 is ok...

This is exactly what Baylor did under Briles and to an extent what A&M did with JFF

Score early and often and put all the pressure on the other team's offense to keep up, forcing them to be erratic and get out of their game plan which leads to mistakes and not being able to keep up.

Ok, so it is possible to field a college defense in Texas. Just seems like the last 2-3 years there's been no D there whatsoever, which is weird for a state with such a proud HS football tradition.

Our(TCU) defense in 2012-2014 was best in the Big 12 and one of the best in the country. I think our defense this year will be a lot better, we will see on Saturday how they do vs. Arkansas. Patterson is a defensive guy

2015 defense took a step back due to injuries. Lost so many players to injury throughout the season. Had to start a white walk on at safety beacuse we had to move a couple backup safeties to starting linebackers. Still were one 2-point conversion away from the playoff.

2016 defense was shite simply because we were undersized in the front 7 and teams just ran at us all game until we wore out. Pass defense/pass rush was one of the best in the nation but run defense and short yardage situations was putrid.

There are so many kids in those high schools and football programs. There is talent and great facilities, but it's overrated for the most part.
