re: When was the last time an LSU team has played to their potential?

If that was it's potential then I'm worried about this year. LSU made a lot of mistakes that they won't be able to do against good teams. It isn't like BYU is a top 25 team
While this is true, thankfully the mistakes they made are all easily correctable if the staff is doing what they are supposed to. Time will tell, there.
Also, we’ve seen MUCH worse starts from the Tigers recently. The two openers vs Wisconsin come to mind. Last year’s game was a flat-out dismal performance. This was a massive improvement from that one.

While not the worst it is not LSU playing to the potential that they can. Had LSU played to the potential they have they would have put up 40+ easily with Guice going for 200, especially on almost 30 carries. I liked what I saw from the defense but BYU doesn't have the athletes to really compete. LSU should be undefeated heading into Florida which will present the first real challenge. By then LSU should have a lot of things worked out.

7 trips inside the redzone is fantastic ...3 touchdowns as a result is not.

Not all of us who are happy with the performance last night are ready to crown O the savior. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of legitimate good. If they can fix the first half penalties, tighten up kick coverage a little more (it was still better than last year), and get their red zone issues sorted out, then you are looking at a pretty damn good offense.
That is still plenty for the team to work on, but putting whatever you feel about O aside for a minute, do you not feel better after that opening performance than after last year’s?

I see your point, and it’s valid. The offense’s ceiling is a lot higher than what we saw. However, I guess my point was that how often does a team get close to that ceiling in game 1? Other than Bama, I saw a LOT of sloppy, mistake ridden football this weekend. A lot of overmatched teams hung around and even won games yesterday.
What we saw wasn’t anywhere close to that, so it’s reason for optimism. O, the staff, and the players still have plenty of work to do, though. I hope we see this offense take that next step.

Va. Tech and the Oregon game are the two games that stick out in my mind.

About 50% of the time, just like I think seeing a team playing to its potential rarely happens as well. There is usually always something that can be improved on. They should have reason for optimism, LSU won which is different than last year. That is starting off right.

I am happy and satisfied with the win last night . The only reason I commented on the OPs statement is because of the hyperbole in some of the commentary about the game .
Putting my personal opinion of Ed Orgeron aside and focusing strictly on the LSU coordinators and play last night ...yes , I'm pleased.

People were very optimistic after the bowl game against Texas Tech in 2015. Incidentally, we ran a ton of jet sweeps in that game too.

as far as wins? or titles? titles? 2007 wins? IDK. 2003 and 2007 both shoulda been undefeated IMO. so who knows. 1958 team?
I know you hate Miles but the 2011 team clearly played to its potential 1 bad game against a team with equal to slightly better talent and a the best coach of this era doesn't Change that

I see what you’re getting at, and you are right that a lot of our fans are getting a little carried away based on one game. That’s the problem with our crazy arse fan base post-Miles. The majority of posters here are locked to one side or the other- all positive or all negative, with no in-between. Sure, if the problems from last night aren’t fixed, then the offense will have problems down the road. If they are, it could be the best offense we’ve seen in several years. Why doesn’t everyone just take last night for what it was- a good start, and move on without either crowning the team or jumping off a cliff in week one?
