That's pretty cool. What a fun player to watch.

Based on what?

Leon Landry and Travis Roy played travel baseball together throughout high school and both are now going to coach LSU together. Pretty cool for them two.

How so? We have to replace the starting pitching, so questions there, but it's a roster stacked with talent.

i mean, we may have a drop off from the team that just played in the national championship game, but the team should still be pretty solid

Don't you know by now, any year where LSU isn't playing for the NC at the end is a "rough year"

LSU played for a NC this season and there will be a looooong line of people ready to tell you that it wasn't good enough.

Kind of bummed that he's called it quits on his baseball career, he had some promise at one point in the minors.
Good for him on coming back to finish his degree though.

It is always possible for a 2011 like season to happen.

You can't compare this team to 2011. For one we weren't coming off a NC Appearance in 2011 we were coming off a year in 2010 where we lost in the regional at UCLA and had 20 losses going into it. If you want to compare them to any team it would be 2010.
After winning it all in 2009 we lost a 4 big time players on offense (LeMahieu, Ochinko, Schimpf, and Mitchell) Just like were losing big time starters this year (Freeman, Robertson, Deichmann, and Pap) but I think the difference this year is that the guys were losing this year are more replaceable than the ones we lost in 2009, I mean hell 2 of them are in the MLB. Were gonna have guys that have played a good bit in different roles returning and a really good incoming class to add to that. Not to mention Bryce Jordan is a veteran and will be back.

I guess Mainieri wants Landry to finish his degree at LSU

Also to expand on your point. Mainieri was even quoted to saying he dropped the ball a bit in recruiting during the 08-09 recruiting cycles, the coaches also lost out on a few top notch players last minute to the draft that they were not expecting and had literally no backup plan (they've corrected the way they approach this now).
To show how bad it was for two years
2008 class
Grant Dozar
Mikie Mahtook
Wet Delatte
Tyler Hanover
Shane Riedie
Matty Ott
Randy Zeigler
Beau Didier
Chris Matulis
Austin Nola
Spencer Mathews
Conclusion: Mikie Mahtook was a superstar, Nola and Hanover were productive college players. Dozar and Ott outside of a single year were serviceable.
2009 class
Mason Katz
Alex Edward
Wes Luquette
Matt Fury
Michael Reed
Forrest Garrett
Jordan Rittiner
Zach LaSuzzo
Chris Cotton
Conclusion: Outside of Katz and Cotton maturing by their junior-senior seasons this was by far the worst class of the Mainieri era.
The roster was slowly sinking in talent during 2010, by 2011 all of the veteran's had moved on and the most talented players on that team were Gausman, Eades, McCune, Jones, Rhymes, Mahtook, most freshmen or transfers.
The 2018 team will not be all freshman holding the line, LSU is bringing in another extremely solid class and oh you return half of the team that made it to the CWS championship series, they'll be more than fine.

I'm a little worried about the sheer amount of innings that will need to be replaced, but we brought in so many arms that it may not be an issue.
As I've said before, we're going to have to get used to seeing a lot more 5 inning starts and multiple relievers in every weekend game.
And Johnny Wholestaff almost every mid week game to flesh out which guys will be ready to throw in relief on the weekends.
