The entire "switched" shite rides on race and even that is suspect.
BLUF ETA: People can post all the links they like from opinion idiots.
I simply say fine. Google the Democratic platform for every election from about 1880 forward.
Tell me if any of them are NOT class warrior platforms.
The end.
In terms of policy and how to run a country, the Democrats then are Democrats now. Class warriors.
Much of the Dem 1900 platform railed against commercialism, monopolies, military spending, unchecked greed, etc etc etc.
The platform was against corporate involvement in politics.
Favored enlarged scope of interstate commerce law.
They wanted the Federal government to get involved in negotiations between companies and their employees.
They wanted to create the Department of labor to protect the "working man".
Basically, they ran on "those rascally Republicans are the party of the rich!!!!
I mean, they deviate some..........but the whole "switched" thing is happy horse shite.
Lest you think 1900 an anomaly. From 1888.
Hell. That could be pulled from heir platform today.
The Demos have been class warriors..........forever. All that changed is that they figured out that they needed to include minorities in their class war when it became convenient.
The whole "Dems for little guy, Repubs for the rich" shite has been a Dem talking point...........FOREVER
If any of you had a fricking independent thought in your pretty little heads, you would have logically rejected the assertion ages ago.

I want to see that long list Democrats who switched to Republicans during the "Southern Strategy".

wtf I love Lincoln now!!!!

quote:
The Democratic Party traces its origins to the inspiration of the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792. That party also inspired the Whigs and modern Republicans. Organizationally, the modern Democratic Party truly arose in the 1830s, with the election of Andrew Jackson. Since the nomination of William Jennings Bryan in 1896, the party has generally positioned itself to the left of the Republican Party on economic issues. They have been more liberal on civil rights issues since 1948. On foreign policy both parties changed position several times.[21]
wtf I hate Thomas Jefferson and James Madison now!!!

Democrats used to be the anti-federalism party. Just look at the electoral college maps and it's plain as day that the current Republican platform is the old Democrat platfor

They have ALWAYS been the class warrior party.
What your sales pitch is when trying to sell isn't terribly relevant.
It's the core sale. The Dem customer has always been the person who wants to get back at those rascally rich.
They just changed their minds a few times on how to do that.

Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837 – June 24, 1908) was an American politician and lawyer who was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, the only President in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office (1885–89 and 1893–97).[1] He won the popular vote for three presidential elections – in 1884, 1888, and 1892 – and was one of two Democrats (with Woodrow Wilson) to be elected president during the era of Republican political domination dating from 1861 to 1933.
Cleveland was the leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats who opposed high tariffs, Free Silver, inflation, imperialism, and subsidies to business, farmers, or veterans on libertarian philosophical grounds. His crusade for political reform and fiscal conservatism made him an icon for American conservatives of the era.[2] Cleveland won praise for his honesty, self-reliance, integrity, and commitment to the principles of classical liberalism.[3] He fought political corruption, patronage, and bossism. As a reformer Cleveland had such prestige that the like-minded wing of the Republican Party, called "Mugwumps", largely bolted the GOP presidential ticket and swung to his support in the 1884 election.[4]

Okay guys, here we go.
Neutral Politics on Reddit

quote:
The Southern Strategy does not exist as it did in the 1960's (overt racism). There is no doubt that it existed, in the Wikipedia article you linked, the Republican National Committee chairman (Ken Mehlman) formally apologized to the NAACP. However, the Republican party since Reagan has been a '3 legged stool' that focuses on:
social conservatism
fiscal restraint
muscular internationalism
The first one is what is driving the southern states to vote Republican. From Wikipedia/Pew Research Center: A key element in the change was the transformation of evangelical white Protestants in the south from a largely nonpolitical approach to a heavily Republican commitment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_the_Southern_United_States#The_South_becomes_Republican:_1964-2016 https://www.people-press.org/2004/12/06/religion-and-the-presidential-vote/
quote:
Asking "did the Southern Strategy exist?" is a really poor way of starting a neutral (or, I'd argue, reasonable) political discussion on the topic of the "Southern Strategy." Firstly, this is a historical question, not a political one. They cannot be conflated. From the perspective of academic historians, it is indeed debatable whether there was a defined "Southern Strategy." Various historians have provided different accounts of Republican party electoral strategies, and one of those is the Southern Strategy. But also, there are indeed some historians who do not subscribe to this narrative and instead have different formulations of the period. So yes - from a historical perspective - the Southern Strategy may not have existed. However, saying that the Southern Strategy did not exist does not deny the indisputable historical fact is that the Republican party used racial backlash in the South as a political strategy. Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman formally apologized for racially polarizing tactics, giving de facto confirmation. On this, there's no legitimate debate. Discussions around racial tactics in the era are often framed around this "Southern Strategy: fact or fiction" dichotomy, which unfortunately veils the underlying racism issue. Both Democrat and Republican election strategies at the time employed highly racist strategies, there's no getting around it.

And your article shows that Cleveland was part of a small 'wing' of Democrats who were pro business.

Democrats have changed their tactics not their views. They make minorities the victim claim to be sypathathtic pay a couple of Race Hustlers, Uncle Tom's, and Political Whores to get votes. The truth is they pander to minorities as long as they don't come around or live in their gated communities.

The real reason for the generational shift is baby boomers in general dislike their parents and couldn't be more different including politically. The baby boomers turned the south red. The Dixiecrats voted democrat until they died...and loved them some bill Clinton, jimmy carter...George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and so on.
