So other than "just don't make a claim" what's the protection for a claiming team that the waiver team doesn't act in bad faith, refuse to agree to a trade and then just dump the whole contract in order to get completely out from under it.

That's why you only place a claim if you're prepared to possibly assume the full contract. It's not likely but it's possible. I don't see how the team dumping the player would be acting in bad faith- you claimed the guy on waivers.

None. Don't claim players you're not willing to take contract and all. That's also why players like Verlander are likely to pass through waivers.

There are a few examples of teams claiming players to block other teams and then getting stuck with players/contracts they don't want.

It's easy to say because it's not my money but we need to claim him and not bet on him clearing waivers. We are last in line for the AL but the nationals are sitting in the NL with scherzer and Strasburg on the DL

He will clear waivers, there is no reason to risk being stuck owing him $65M+

The 2012 Dodgers-Red Sox deal was a waiver trade because the major leaguers involved were like James Loney and those three monstrous Boston contracts going to LA

I don't understand why people are acting like getting Verlander is plausible.

Because they're trying to give themselves some hope, which doesn't really bother me. Regardless, the chance of us getting Verlander is very very very very very small. If Lunhow wanted to make a move for a SP, he should have done it before the trade deadline.

It's a small chance, moves like that don't ever happen in August outside of the Boston/LA deal, but I don't think this is impossible

Only sliver of hope I see for it is they thought they had an impact reliever deal done and now you aren't getting an impact reliever, so they need to look at different ways to improve the team.

I think they end up making a waiver deal for a meh reliever though who doesn't help much

If you are reading this, I hate you Jeff Luhnow.

I've enjoyed your posts in the DAT, and you make good points about the Yankees.

While the Yankees may not be able to "thank" the Astros for making the WS, another team probably will.

If you read the piece and its blurbs about the Astros, there are some glaring points that cannot be ignored. The Astros bullpen is ranked 12th in the AL, and it has been a banged up one with ineffectiveness. What did Luhnow do about it? Add Liriano, who has an ERA of 4.58 and will likely only face lefties, and what do you have? Not much of an improvement, really.

The Astros brass should have gotten someone, maybe even two, additional pitchers. The bats are there; the pitching is not. Let's make it an even playing field, get rid of Tucker, Fisher, and AJ Reed and go get an arm or two. Whitley will not see MMP until 2020, and with the Astros playing their best baseball now, I'm reminded of Theo Epstein's quote, "IF NOT NOW, WHEN?"

This was the time. Luhnow had one shot, one opportunity, to make it happen. Luhnow did not capture it, he just let it slip.
