Replacing cut pines on a deer lease

Someone on our hunting lease (30 members) cut about 70 pines (no one will own up to it). It was brought to our attention by the timber company. They are charging us $100 per pine to replant. Not that we have a leg to stand on, but does this seem high? Anyone ever had this happen to them?

Someone cut trees for a food plot?

It looks more like a long shooting lane. They started about 20 yards into the 3 year old planted plantation and made a straight lane. It is on the property line so we are trying to say that it may not be us but they are not buying it!

this is why landowners keep jacking up hunting lease rates every year. They're trying to price out trashy fricks like you.
And yes. You are the reason lots of people can't have nice things.

Timber companies plant about 500 trees to the acre (some more, some a little less). Total cost of reforestation is about $250 per acre. You've done about $35-50 worth of actual damage. Charging $7000 for that is stiff. But it's also a serious deterrent.

Lawd. I thought you were talking 15 year old trees at least.

That shouldn't be that hard to narrow down, almost every hunting lease guys have "areas" whether its officially or unofficial. I mean rarely does a guy on a 30 person lease just go somewhere random and set up a stand.
Is there anything in the lease contract? I mean that's only $235 each, probably one reason they set the price so high. They know there are 30 members and a $50/ member fine is jack shite. So they said $250/ member seems about right. Enough to piss you off, but not enough you won't pay or do anything about it.

A world with 70 less pine trees is a better world. I'd like to buy that man a beer.

Mandated work day,
Replant them yourselves,
Claim you don't know what they are talking about,
...
Profit $7k

We have a few people who hunt in the area but we cannot prove who did it (no stands within 300 yards). All members have been questioned and surprisingly no one knew about it. A few guys on our board want to kick the four possible violators out but without concrete evidence I think that is a BS move.

How do you not have an idea who did it? 70 trees being cut down is a lot of work, and someone saw something. Hell, look for tire tracks.
ETA:
At $7000, that has to be considered some major property damage. Call the police and get them to investigate.

Be prepared for your lease to be terminated. Even after restitution.

Did they just bush hog a strip or did this require chainsawing?

Exactly the opposite. I'm not paying for some other trashy frick that won't fess up. I wouldn't be hunting around someone dumb enough to cut timber company pine in the first place. Easy Francis

Not 3 year old trees. I could cut that many down in an hour easy with a chain saw, maybe 30 minutes. You are talking about head high trees maybe 2 inch diameter.

The pines were cut about a month ago. During the summer there is little to no activity at the club. Because it was so long ago and tracks would have washed away. The person topped the trees mostly so they were not cut at the base. I am sure it was done by a few people due to the size of the project but the idiots did not even clean up after. They just left the trees there instead of hiding the evidence.

If you have it narrowed down to 4, then chances are they aren't all idiots. It would take a jackass or an idiot to do this.
As said, for $7000 I might consider calling the authorities.
What's to prevent the property owner to not do this every now and then? As said, that costs them well under $1000 to replant and the difference between new trees and 3 year olds is not that great. Would be a great money maker for them.

You could probably go in with a pair of loppers and cut 70 saplings in less time than that.
