#1 Brandon cole man

Underwhelmed as a UDFA out of Rutgers in 2015 as well as in 2016 camp. However, he was an underrated contributor last season as a 4th receiver. For those not paying attention, or would rather live off past narratives, he's been by all accounts the BREAK out star of camp so far. It might blow the minds of saintards worldwide but IT IS POSSIBLE for players to improve 2-3-4 years in.

"I've played with him now for a long time and feel he's a guy who can play every position, so his versatility in this offense is really good," added Brees. "He's a very smart player and he's been a guy who's just done whatever we've needed him to do over the last few years"

"There's really not a guy who I have more trust in then Brandon Coleman, honestly. "

#2 David onyemata at DE

He is now entrenched as the starter opposite Sheldon Rankins. Multiple tweets have confirmed this, we will have to find help at DE somewhere else. He's turning out to be an extremely shrewd draft pick. Give credit where it's due here

hopefully he can be the surprise player like Fairley was last year. 6 1/2 sacks is a tall order (Fairley's 2016 total) but its not just about QB sacks. Hopefully Onyemata can do enough by just providing a push from the inside.

Basically... don't let the QB sit back and relax and pick apart our D. Make the motherfricker move around more than he'd like... bat down passes occasionally at the line!!! Something.

be a pain in the arse... draw some holding calls.. the refs WANT to throw that flag!

the guy can only get better with reps.. right??

I don't care if he only has 2-3 sacks. As long as he is not a liability. The Main thing about the Fairley loss is spacing. You know Rankins is getting the double team and Onyemata is getting the solo treatment. Line Jordan next to Rankins which means if the Guard/Center combo block occupies Rankins then Jordan gets a single unless they leave in a TE to help or chip. You know Onyemata and the other DE spot is getting single protection all day long. At the end of the year Rankins numbers might suck but if he is taking the Double team all year allowing other players to go off I can pay him for that.

Coleman did suck not just in camp but in the regular season. He dropped balls left and right last year.

If Drew and Sean Payton do anything, they develop (unknown)wide receivers. I have little doubt Coleman will do well this year.

I want to point out too that Fleener only had 3 drops (according to that; maybe another site would give him 5) and at least 2 came in the first 2-3 games. It was one of those bad first impression situations.

Also Ginn only had 5 last year but everyone still harps on the 10 the year before that (which, iirc, was the most he had in a year by maybe 3). Will he drop a few? Definitely, but I'd be surprised if he hits 10 again.

And I'm surprised someone would call Coleman out on drops. That was one thing he really improved on last year. I think the bigger issue is he is never going to be that 60+ catch guy, instead staying between 30-50. And that's fine for a 3rd or 4th receiver.

He did not show that Sunday. His hands looked as expected.

Saints camp myths for current players? Here are a few more.

Landon Turner is a beast - He may not make the team this year.

Lampman is a camp body - He may be one of our best ST players.

Davison - Never gets talked about but will start on run downs and do very well.

Swann has concussion issues - This is partly true from two years ago but not at all why he missed last year.

Peat is out of shape - To be fair, haven't seen that this year but last year it was brought up a lot even when he was in great shape.

A couple of other guys who are flying low under the radar but could make some noise are:

- Gwachum - Physically, the talent is there. It's now or never though.
- Crawley - I think he could take a big step up this year.
- Lasco - We are stacked at RB so I doubt he gets many touches but I think he's pretty good.
- Erik Harris/Bighill - Both are talented. Will be interested if they can make it.

He never looks comfortable catching the ball. Almost timid and unnatural. Like he's thinking more than just reacting. Too many times the ball came flying out on first contact because he takes a week to secure the catch. Very robotic in his "catch to secure" ball control.

That would be great news, because last year's Brandon Coleman can be easily replaced. Let's hope he's really a different player.

I stand corrected. I am the only person that felt like he was the weak link in the receiving corp last year.

For the length of time Coleman has been on the roster, his production sure hasn't been up to his position.

When the lights come on for real, let's see if he can finally catch the ball in traffic and use that big tall frame to become productive in a Payton offense where most unknown receivers tend to flourish.

While he didn't have a drop issue last year, this was still true. Securing the catch while getting hit is an issue and he is no Colston in that regard, which is why I don't see him going past a certain point unless he can correct that.

This also seemed to be Fleener's issue as he had a few pop out while getting hit. Then again Graham also had that issue on top of the alligator arms he developed.

Hopefully CJ can work on these guys to fix that issue.

Coleman plays like he is 5'8". Which makes him useless for a man that is 6'6"

Drew Brees "rah rah looks awesome QB speak rah rah "

And there is bonerhug defending not only him but fleener no saints player has ever done anything wrong!!

Exactly.

The dude plays 30% of our offensive snaps and has 38 targets last year. You have to make the most of your opportunity yet he has failed to reel in tough catches when it matters. When you are targeted only 38 times and drop 3 and add 3 more questionable drops you aren't doing your job

Can't argue with that.

However, when asked about Coleman last year, Payton said he was having a "pedestrian" camp. This year, is getting Coach's praises. That, in itself, is a difference.
Also, take it for what its worth, but a couple of the local writers say he just looks different this camp vs past years. Maybe a confidence level.

Lastly, Don't disregard the return of Curtis Johnson. He seems to get the best out of guys like Coleman.

Met him at Minicamp. He signed my son's picture of him.

He is fricking huge. He looks like a professional wrestler. My god he is big.
