Today’s hot rumor is we’re close to a deal for the Basel CB Manuel Akanji... but he would not move until the summer...

22, tall, fast and good on the ball... I’ve never seen him play, but supposedly played well against United in UCL..

I agree, even if we were still planning to go after VVD, we needed another CB... in the past, so onwards... hopefully we are moving in right direction..

This is the plan, VVD and let Matip and Ananji battle it our with Ragnar pairing with the loser of that battle as back ups. Sounds good to me!!!

Man that's a massive change of Fortune in our top 4 CBs in a very short time (assuming it comes to fruition)

Read this morning that we're now considered the front runner to sign Goretzka... Man that'd be sweet

Just wanted to pop in and add some things to the discussion here. As already stated I'm ecstatic about VvD as much as everyone else, but like all LFC fans we tend to immediately look to the next target so in that vein I wanted to comment a bit about that. As much of you know we've also been eyeing Manuel Akanji which seems interesting, but I know nothing about him save that he comes from the same club as our Egyptian Prince and that Dortmund are very interested as well

In addition y'all might have heard about Can looking to leave this summer, but apparently Juventus want to bring him in now. So with Hendo's injuries and Can's increasing likeliness to leave us sooner rather later we need to strengthen our midfield as well. We know Naby is coming but what other options do we have ... according to Melissa Reddy our goal is to strengthen our spine. The person on that list that comes to mind is Leon Goretzka who will be able to move on a Bosman this summer much like Can and he's somewhat interested in a move to Liverpool. Though he will definitely have many other options as well, but I read somewhere that obviously Klopp has a major pull with him but also Matip as well. It will definitely be entertaining to see how this all plays out throughout this window and moving into the next.

Finally about our little magician, we all know he wants his move to Barca and I still believe he will go there this summer. Yet, there still might be hope that he would stay if in these signings we show the ambition to win silverware. Plus Bobby is still here. Also there is this little statement from fat Ronaldo about how Barca treat Brazilians terribly and how he should look elsewhere instead. So I know it's a longshot but if we hold on to him with the people we are bringing in and potentially looking to get ... we could be a very formidable team to beat.

Very excited to see how the chips fall in 2018. Happy New Years everyone, YNWA!

Edit: Oh and frick Man U & Barca

I'm still hoping for De Vrij until he re-ups with Lazio or signs a pre-contract with someone else...

I like the fact they are both dutch, same age and could form a strong partnership for us (and holland)..

I say that not really seeing Akanji play, but if thats the way we go.. I can see it playing out like you mentioned above..

The question is, who do we flog Lovren off to this summer, when's on 100k/wk? Is he content taking a pay cut somewhere else or is someone stupid enough to match that?

I’d say perfect world, give me Akanji to pair with Gomez for long run to learn with Gomez also being able to play RB, VVD and Matip as first choice with Klavan as emergency and to give us a savvy veteran on the cheap on the bench.

I haven’t seen much of Akanji, but I don’t think he’s better than Matip (for now). That said, I think he and Gomez could be nipping on the heels of our starters to push them as well.

Now if we get the midfield sorted, we could be very dangerous

Yeah - I am really interested to see a VVD/Matip pairing... it could be very good.. two very tall CBs with very good ball skills that glide across the pitch..

My main issue with him is he seems to get a lot of knocks and is out for periods (kinda like Sakho used to)..

Ive read some suggest that TAA may be poised to switch back to DM... I guess that all depends on Joe's long term future... I admit I wasn't sold on him as a RB early on, but he has me convinced...

If they both stay at RB... Clyne is surplus IMO

I'd like Clyne to stay and one of them to move positions...

I can see TAA doing this for sure. Does he not play as winger sometimes for our under/ teams? Seeing him either move up the pitch or into the midfield is what I believe his ultimate destination.

He played pretty much all over before with the youth teams but I think he’s at his best on the right side, be it as a RB, RM or winger. He delivers a great ball. Ultimately I’d like to keep him as our back up with possible occasional spot duty as a midfielder or winger and Clyne starting. I feel like people are forgetting just how good and reliable Clyne was for us. Don’t get me wrong, Gomez and TAA have also been good with minimal mistakes, but Clyne was our player of the year 2 years ago and this is his first real problem with injury.

I know he started out as a midfielder... Im not sure if he plays on the wings for the academy at times, but I could see him doing that easily...

I don't mind Clyne as our RB, but IMO he has somewhat disappointed me after his move here... I think he's just solid... both defensively and offensively, though the latter is more of a disappointment... I know that sounds negative, but I thought he was poised to really kick on and become a great RB when he moved here..

I don't really think he's been missed this season looking back..

TAA does seem tailor made for the RB position, but I'd be curious to see how he'd perform as a DM... kinda like what Fabinho did at Monaco..

Honestly, I wish we'd just buy a DM and not worry about all that...

Good problems to have..

I know what you mean, he’s absolutely not the deadliest going forward, but I have no problem being a little unbalanced and having someone much more defensively sound at RB while we have Robertson and Moreno venturing forward more often. Also takes some pressure off of Hendo (or whoever our DM) is to give us a little better shape. We’re plenty good enough going forward to not have to rely on a fullback. Just my opinion

yeah - don't get me wrong... I like Clyne and RB is not something I would have advocated the need to upgrade with our other holes..

Now - It's the lowest need with the deepest pool of players out of the 11 positions..
