No reason to do that. Ron Paul and the Koch Brothers abandoned the party since as you said they don't win electoral office and have no influence.

In other words, it will never be the most effective vehicle toward libertarianism.

For better or worse, the best bet will be through one of the two parties -- and I wouldn't bet on the one that is now basically full blown socialist. Although, I wouldn't bet the house on the other either.

Baby steps.

What do you mean thinking about aligning yourself? Either your views are aligned with a political ideology or not.

It's unfortunately a self-defeating ideology from a global perspective since its purpose is counter to human nature: limiting it's own power if elected. Regardless, the views are valuable and I think they should be pushed, regardless if a person is affiliated with the party or not (like Rand and Amash).

This is the most-important point. So you're kinda going to be wasting your time by aligning with the party.

Here is a quote from the VP candidate in the recent election:

The Libertarian Party would do itself a favor by focusing on building a national party structure. Win some seats on local councils and in state legislatures, then work your way up to U.S. House and Senate elections. If you want libertarian ideas in Presidential politics right now, your best bet is Rand Paul.

Admittedly the Johnson/Weld ticket of 2016 was a rather weak representation of Libertarian leadership.

I am registered as a libertarian. Tbh, the best thing that could happen is for more people to do what Austin Petersen is doing and what Justin Amash and Thomas Massie have done; libertarian or conservatarian people should take over the Republican party. The GOP has become a vessel for big government and isn't too different than the Democratic party as of late. Would be nice to have it back.

I am a member of the Libertarian Party as it has the closest alignment with my very libertarian political views. However, the party's leadership is not as good as it could be and they shoot themselves in the foot quite often. When election time comes I'll vote for a different party's candidate if I feel they represent my beliefs. For example, I would have voted for Rand Paul if he were the Republican nominee, over Johnson. But given the choice of Clinton or Trump, I went with Johnson.

frick the false dichotomy...

Let people choose who they wish. No need to extort taxpayers into believing theyll never win if they leave the GOP.

From what I can tell from the Libertarian candidates put forth for the position of POTUS my only conclusion is that the LP is funded by and for the RNC/DNC

They need a better candidate for president in 2020 or your wasting your time . Johnson brought to much attention to his self in a bad way. The party will struggle because if it's states to get many democratic votes then the news will destroy the libertarian party. They need their own Trump .

But they won't win. Even Ron Paul, who many libertarians say is the greatest libertarian of modern times, eventually chose the GOP over the LP.

The party itself is a mess. I mostly consider myself to be a right leaning libertarian.

Like others have said, the best way for libertarians to have a real voice is to vote libertarian leaning Republicans into office.
