A helpful answer on the first response? Is this real life?

Use Spotify instead.Youtube has all kinds of issues but it is the one place to find some real rare recordings of your favorite tunes.

I feel like an idiot for not looking into this, I just figured I'd keep using YouTube and complaining about it

Yeah, just press the headphones icon on the top corner of the video

You can, YouTube just gave me a free trial of YouTube Red for 3 months. Can play any YouTube video in the background and there are no fricking ads. It's great. Also can play with the phone locked and other apps open. Just make a playlist of your videos and let 'er rip
Not sure what's with all the downvotes. It's a legit thing that works.

I could be mistaken, but I think that's the function of that YouTube Red thing that YouTube has been promoting lately.

Not like you have anyone to text, Pels fan99

You can also do this by hitting the "flag" button on a video and then not clicking anything else. You can open other apps or turn your phone off and it'll keep playing (after hitting the flag button). It'll give you the option to actually flag the video or cancel. Don't hit either. Just leave the pop up box open and do whatever.
I do this when I want to listen to long videos that I'm not actually watching.

On my Galaxy S7 the text pop up just overlays on top of youtube as it continues. What phone do you have?

You can, but you have to be a YouTube Red or Google music subscriber(Red comes with it). YouTube background play and no commercials are basically the only features of Red, though. I have it, just because of Google music.
