Will MySpace ever lose its monopoly?

Story from 2007
Is this just about the most wrong the "experts" have been? Key quotes from MySpace wiki page today:
In April 2008, Myspace was overtaken by Facebook in the number of unique worldwide visitors, and was surpassed in the number of unique U.S. visitors in May 2009
As of March 2017, Myspace was ranked 3,178 by total Web traffic, and 1,650 In the United States.
Myspace generated $800 million in revenue during the 2008 fiscal year. In June 2011, Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake jointly purchased the company for approximately $35 million.

John Barrett of TechNewsWorld claims that MySpace is well on the way to becoming what economists call a "natural monopoly". Users have invested so much social capital in putting up data about themselves it is not worth their changing sites
quote:
But if you change social networks you not only have to move all your videos, audios, messages, photos elsewhere but you also lose your network of friends unless they migrate with you. MySpace won't make that easy. Its massive user base will help maintain its dominance, according to co-founder Chris DeWolfe. "In social networking, there is a huge advantage to have scale. You can find almost anyone on MySpace and the more time that has been invested in the site, the more locked in people are".

I've worked with a VC client that is pretty good natured about their misses. They once passed on an early stage investment in a video hosting site because they didn't think it would be easy to monetize. To them, YouTube wasn't going to be a good investment.

It actually hasn't been a good investment in any of its late stage iterations. One of the biggest operating company losers that Google has. They have tried everything to make it cash flow positive, and nothing has worked.
They only paid $1.65 billion for it eleven years ago. So it didn't even sell for a big valuation, by tech unicorn status.

I have no clue, because that's not my usual world, but they consider it a miss. I think sequoia made about ~40x on what was a year long, early stage investment in YouTube. That's not too shabby.

Apparently people still use it for music.

Youtube is the greatest website in the history of the internet.

And it's not hard to understand why. Video files are large and require a lot of bandwidth/storage to make it readily available to stream. Even with the required ad time for some videos now, and the other revenue stream gimmicks they've tried, it's not a major profit center.

How many times did you change YOUR top 8?

This new thing of playing ads in the middle of videos on Facebook may be the worst thing so far. Let me just get it over with at the beginning of the video I want to watch.

What's even more amazing is that a handful of people still use Photobucket.

Feel that way about my Yahoo account that I started in the 90s. It has long not been my primary mail but still visit it once month just see if a long lost person from my travels tries to connect. Yahoo really shite the bed.
For me personally the greatest things ever are Google, YouTube and Wiki.

In 2007 MySpace was already considered lame and young people were already on facebook. The experts were badly out of touch here.
