A commitment thread that turns into a recruiting melt about numbers in June. I thought I'd never see the day..
Posted on 6/24/17 at 10:33 pm to cattus
I recall O saying the day (or maybe the day after) of his hire that he was gonna go out and get recruits regardless of their number of stars. He said something like we are gonna go out and get 2, 3, 4 star recruits; if they are hungry we're gonna get 'em.
While there is a contingent here who likes to make the point that stars don't matter, I must say that I am a little confused and perhaps concerned. Our top recruit will probably switch to Georgia leaving us with Joseph at no. 46 nationally. The other 18 recruits are outside of the top 200 (more specifically top 232). Stars-wise this class looks nothing like the Miles classes and more like well Miss. State last year for instance. But perhaps stars really don't matter and classes like this one will finally help us compete with Alabama.

That's great and all but I don't see why LSU has to go to bama to get an athlete of his caliber. Guys like that grow on trees down here.

I would say yes. Don't shoot me.

Does anyone know his 40 time? I kmow I'll get killed for this but Scout.com says he runs a 4.73, that can't be right....

Make that tree. One tree. Of all the RBs in this state, the only one more impressive in 2018 is Carter.
The real question is how a kid with this much talent has just 3 stars?

He has excellent acceleration and short area quickness, but I wouldn't be surprised by 4.6-4.7 range 40 time.
Got walked down by a DB in his film.
I like the pick up.
Guess LSU saw Bolden up close at camp and just preferred Provens.

Louisiana is down this year and a ways down. I just think O is trusting his guys with a lot of these recruits. There's tons of talent out there you really need to see it up close, test these guys out then offer the best, that's what they are doing. Smarts and toughness go a long way in football. If you have a good mix of these type of guys and then your looking at a banner year in 2019 LSU will be just fine. Bring the best guys in to compete with the bad arse freshman but at least you won't have depth problems like Miles had. We played way too many freshman and you need guys that will stay 4 or 5 years mixed in with those talented freshman. We will end the year with more 4 and 5* talent. It's not like we are recruiting 5'11" ends. The 3* linebacker we got the other day is a lot like Anthony and Thorton from TX. These guys can play football. I trust the coaches until seen otherwise.

No way he runs a 4.7 dude has solid wheels. Gotta be a 4.5 guy.

All we can do is trust the coaching staff

This team is getting stacked with talented non pre madonas, Hard working athletes that are all blowing it up in camps!! By NSD all will be 4's and a couple 5 stars. Trust the process and staff. They are finally evaluating the talent and going after the true best. Not what 247 and the general population want. That is usually what causes bust

And "3 star u" won the title in 03 and 07... and most of the guys who make LSU nflsu are 2-4's so please stop going off stars. Please look at all of these guys offer sheets and their film and come back and tell me you don't want them in purple and gold.

No idea why you're down voting.. kids that are committing and about to commit will all contribute as freshman. And give us the number one class in the nation

^ JR class 2003
04 class - #3 nationally
3 Five stars
6 top 100 players
9 top 200 players

Most of the guys we sign are 2-4 stars, obviously most of our 40+ NFL players are 2-4 stars.

A little breakdown of 5 stars at LSU...
According to 247composite (post 2000):
-19 5 stars signed (draft eligible classes)
-10 5 stars drafted
-LSU has signed ~350 players in those draft eligible classes.
-79 players drafted from these classes
So let's look at the #s:
> 50% of 5 stars get drafted
~ 20% of non 5 stars get drafted
5% of LSU signees are 5 stars
12.5% of LSU draft picks are 5 stars
5 stars are 2.5x as likely to be drafted as all 4 + 3 stars
Let's take a look at the undrafted 5 stars:
01' Ben Wilkerson: AA center
04' Xavier Carter: World class track athlete
05' Ryan Perriloux: No lack of talent
07' Terrance Tolliver: NFL bust***
09' Russel Shepard: On active NFL roster
09' Craig Loston: NFL bust ***
09' Chris Davenport: NFL bust***
10' Lael Collins: Murder investigation (BS)
10' Anthony Johnson: on active NFL roster
-So of 19 signed 3 weren't good enough to play in the league, and one of the 9 undrafted should have been a first rounder.
-Chris Davenport is the only 5 star that wasn't a significant contributor at LSU. Xavier focused on track obviously but did see reps early in football
How about our top prospects in the upcoming draft?
-seniors T White, E Pocic, and K Beckwith were all top 100 players.
-underclassmen J Adams and L Fournette were both 5 stars
Next years top undersclassmen prospects?
Arden Key and Derrius Guice, both top 100 players
I'd say recruiting services do a hell of a job projecting 17 years old kids if you ask me.

Commitable offers? All highlight films are impressive.
I would love to see all these guys in purple and gold and would root like hell for them. Just saying numbers don't lie, the higher ranked class you sign the more talent you will likely have on your football team. Nothing more nothing less
Of course there are great players that are ranked 3 stars, many of these probably are. high 4 and 5 stars pan out at a higher rate though.

Yes out all of those years and class's you were able to list the names on that shirt of a list... SO MANY players on those teams and in recent years who were greats players were 3's and 4's. Your breakdown was long and nice and props for the work but These 3's and 4's we're after and have had in the past have been the team leaders who are starting in the league. And in this class all will be bumped to fours soon and should be. 20+ offers with most and film is jaw dropping
