Watch 3 stars, it's true. But I trust the "process". Every year we have a few early 3-star commits who magically end up signing with TCU, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Etc...when we bring in bigger fish

Very nice analysis.

Just one small correction...

The '04 recruit class was the SR (or RS-JR) class of '07.

I remain open minded about O and the new offensive staff. I think it's a little naive to think O is uncovering a class full of 3 stars that will turn into Mo Claibornes and Tyson Jacksons.

By the same token, I don't think Coach O et al are recruiting a class full of Kentucky or MSU type talent.

I think it's more likely that O is locking up some underrated guys early but also that a number of these guys are solid, program type kids. And like Arky has said...that's ok to a degree.

I don't think 24/7 evaluators miss that often. Usually you can find 1-2 guys...maybe 3 per class that turn out both under and overrated.

Some of these 3 stars will eventually get 4 star bumps.

O is definitely trusting his own evaluation skills...that's for sure. I don't see why people don't give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.

O will sink or swim based on what kind of OC and DC he has and by whether or or not he can find a QB worth a damn and stock the trenches on both sides of the ball.

I think people are giving Da Coach O the benefit of the doubt on recruiting. That's what he's best at...But that doesn't mean people aren't a little concerned about what may be an emerging pattern.

FWIW Houston Nutt beat LSU's arse two years in a row with a team full of three stars that O recruited.

Well given Canada's style of offense it may work if he is running jetsweeps

The 2008-09 ole Miss team that kicked our arse two years in a row were all of O's recruits, many of which were not big names. As others have said, the current rankings are far from what the final rankings will look like. Once these kids conclude the camp circuit, play their senior year, and compete at all star games, guys will rise and fall all throughout the rankings. It happens every year. Plus, it's not uncommon for the elite recruits to wait until February signing day before making a decision so they can take their visits. We will land a few of those guys as we always do and some of our current commits will rise substantially. I'll be willing to bet we finish with a top 5 class.

The three star excuse: but look at his offers and trust our coaches.

The gap between LSU and Bama is widening big time now.

You do realize that our coaches know a hell of a lot more than the recruiting services about how these kids project in college. Approximately half of the 5 stars have never paned out since the early 2000's. For that reason alone is why everyone should take these rankings with a grain of salt.

24/7 is pretty good at identifying the raw "talent".

What they don't capture well are the intangibles and how a guy fits into a particular school's system.

Again...it's about QB and getting some big, mean, physical hombres along the Oline for LSU to make the next jump offensively.

That's only generally true with respect to final rankings. Those stars rankings always change based on the number and quality of offers, camp evaluations, etc

You are right.

That's why I said classes signed, and that we haven't not signed any highly ranked guys yet just accepted a good bit of lower ranked commitments at this time

You do not understand statistics do you? Half of the 5 stars end up the the NFL. What percentage of 3 stars do the same?

The recruiting sites actually have a fabulous track record at ranking classes.

Half of the 5 stars also flame out in college. I'm not saying we shouldn't go after the best players, but the coaches know which players fit their new system the best. Stars and rankings don't mean jack once you step foot on campus anyway.

Except that the star rankings fantastically predict success. Other than that, they are useless

One can not argue with CEO's and Robinson's results in recent years.

I'm going to have 100% trust in Aranda and his D boys to know what they want, recognize it regardless of stars, and go out and get them. He has a track record that one can see.

The remaining question is Canada, and CEO in relation to the offense, to be able to know exactly what he wants, get them, and use them. I have hope and faith in this aspect. Still in a little bit wait and see mode. If some of these 3*'s are making an impact of offense in 2-3 years I'm convinced. Until then, I'll cautiously reserve judgement.

One can definitely, without a doubt, argue that the ranking services are good at predicting who the best (not the good, but the best) are. They have a track record of finding the future NFL'ers.

Yep, Bama spits them out to the NFL and plays for championships; so does tOSU.

At the same time UGA, USCw, and LSU spit them out at equitable rates. No none have played for championships. There are way too many moving parts to say NFL talent = Champion/Playoffs. LSU is the rule that proves the exception in fact (if you take look at us over a broad enough time span, say 5 years).
