Scum bag dog breed and scum bag owners. No logic in the world can explain that these dogs have any right to be on this planet. There are other options without the risk. Downvote away pitbull defenders.

One of the kids was probably crying and that attracted the dogs attention.

Send all the pit bulls to China for that dog meat festival.

I'm sure I will catch some flack, but I honestly believe that the majority of problems this breed faces today is because of their owner. Sure if the dog attacks, it can cause severe damage. But the point is ... if the pit bull has a responsible owner, an attack should never occur.
Will Cover = pit bull apologist?

I look at the individual dog rather than the breed.

I sewd up a kids face just a few weeks ago. He'd been mangled by his family's pit bull which, of course, had up to that point been the sweetest cuddly nonaggressive little puppy ever.
I just stared angrily at his mother when she she asked, "Is he gonna have scars???"

I know an attorney that was handling a case where a guy was walking down the street and a Pitbull broke loose when across the street and tore this guy's poor leg apart....
The guy has like over $40,000 in medical expenses and it was a renter who the dog belong to and so they're trying to go after the owner the landlord who has any money at all what a lousy situation.
I've seen pitbulls be very timid and calm and well-behaved and then I've seen frankly less off people have this breed chained up and they are not well behaved dogs...
In many cases these dogs represent "hey don't come here"

A few personal observations.
The problem with pit bulls is their potential to do harm. When I say potential, I am referring to their jaw strength and whatever it is in their genetic code that enables them to be transformed into a vicious fighting dog, if the owner so desires. Years ago, I witnessed dog fighting first hand. A pit bull is a machine when it comes to being vicious.
The other issue is, as you say, bad owners. I think this breed attracts "bad owners" many of whom train their dogs to be aggressive. Others are just a-holes that for a multitude of reasons create an issue with their dog. Sometimes it's through neglect for the animal. Or sometimes it's their own, I'm a bad-arse posturing, that the animal picks up on.
I had a neighbor that owned a pit. The dog was trained to protect their household, but seemed to be very intelligent and understood the difference between the boundaries of their home and being out for a walk. In every encounter I had with the dog when they were out for a walk, the dog seemed gentle and well behaved.
Well one day the pit owners neighbor sent their 10 year old son to the pit owner's house to borrow a cup of sugar. The boy walked up to the storm door and threw it open to knock on the door. Only problem was the main door was already open and the dog saw his move as crossing a boundary. When the boy saw the dog running toward the door, he took off in a panic. The dog ran him down in the front yard and pinned him to the ground while mouthing his thigh. The dog never broke the skin and the boy was unharmed, but the boys parents, and many of the other neighbors, were not happy with what could have happened.
Now I know many will say, the dog did what he was trained to do and no harm no foul. That was the pit owners reaction. However, these are good people and to their credit they felt compelled to visit with the people on our street to explain what happened and assure everyone that the dog was not a threat.
When they came to my house I immediately assured them that I understood the situation. But then they said they weren't sure why so many people were upset by what happened. I looked at them and said, it's the potential for something terrible to happen. They looked almost puzzled. I said, let me ask you a question. Would you have a problem with me leaving a loaded 12 gauge shotgun leaning against the front wall of my house? They said, of course! My response was, but it won't hurt a soul if left alone. They didn't say another word in defense of their situation. Like I said, good people.

Yeah because the breed hasn't proven to be a common denominator at all.

Dogs send more women and children to the hospital than firearms.

You are required by law to report the situation to the police and child welfare.
I hope you did that.

People sending kids to the neighbor's house happens every day all over the country. Notice that most/all of the reports mention pit bull mixes.
How could anyone possibly need any further explanation.

Horse shite. Stupid owners should be.
At some point, you've got to accept that pit bulls are a status symbol for low class trash, just like the rebel flag and big chrome rims.
Sorry for the breed, but they've got to be exterminated for general safety.

The dogs or the low class trash?
I have a pit mix, and there can be 4 million articles about how they are bad and i certainly won't be listening to them. I would trust my dog with little kids in the same bed. He has been around kids when I am away and the kids adore him and don't want him to come home with me.
I know there are bad ones, but there are good ones as well.
Oh yea and that jaw strength stuff has been debunked hundreds of times
