It's not a deal breaker, but he's also an expriring on a small contract so may be he's got some value. He's also coming off a foot injury that required surgery in March. It's that or we take back Jordan Hill since they want to let him go, probably, and is only $1m more expensive. The issue with Hill, though, is that his team option is up on 6/30 so doubtful it'll be exercised unless there is a plan in place beforehand.

quote:The concern would be whether Minny thinks they can trade Rubio elsewhere for better value and therefore open up enough cap space to fit Jrue in free agency. However, if Jrue wants to leave, I would love this deal to get Rubio AND create a nice TPE while maintain status as over the cap.
The Pels sign Holiday using his Bird Rights, the Timberwolves have something like 22 mil in cap space even before trading away Rubio, so their cap space minus Rubio's contract would allow them to fit Jrue into their team without going over the cap. The Pels can take back Rubio plus the difference between Rubio's salary and Jrue's salary as a TPE.
For example:
Pelicans sign Jrue to a 4/110 contract (flat 27.5 per)
Minnesota fits Jrue into their cap because they have 22 in space and they are sending out Rubio (Jrue is only 27.5 mil, so he fits in easily)
Pels get back Rubio and his 14 mil in salary, and get an 13.5 mil TPE (the difference between Rubio and Jrue's salary), allowing them to stay above the cap
It's likely that Minnesota couldn't fit Jrue into their space without having to make other trades and they are attempting to trade Rubio anyway, so they could do this without the Pelicans having to give up an asset.

And that is the inherent problem. They almost certainly can get a lottery protected 1st round pick for him, the challenge would be not taking back any salary on their part, which is what a Jrue S&T primarily provides.
But yeah, it seems like we would need to send back more value given their advantageous situation.

that all makes sense, thanks
with regard to trading Rubio first that's the kicker...he will have suitors. still I think that if holiday goes there, and there is any interest in Rubio here, I'd be ok with sending out an asset like a future protected pick. The optics would be terrible (burning ANOTHER pick on holiday) but better in the long run

What if we did Jrue & Ajinca for Rubio & Aldrich?
Ajinca and Aldrich are par to me but Ajinca is $2m cheaper. He would be OK behind Towns and Dieng as far as bigs goes and he can shoot which they want.
We may still need to throw a pick in, but I'm OK with that.

I get the trepidation but Aldrich is essentially an expiring. Only on the books for 2018-2019 at $2m+ if not waived by 6/30/18

There'd have to be no market for Rubio to be able to pull of a Holiday/Rubio S&T. I still think a Moore for Rubio package makes a lot of sense for both sides. And in the Pelicans case it reduces the value of Justin Holiday to the Wolves which hopefully reduces their interest in Jrue. If Moore for Rubio makes Minnesota more interested in Collison/Teague/Hill than Jrue then maybe you get Jrue and his brother for a price you want. Losing Moore also increases the value Justin provides to the team.

Minny tested/is testing the market to know what is the value of Rubio.
Best case for them is to trade him for a pick. With no salary back.
With Aldrich they may have problem with finding new home. Also Dengs contract starts this year.
So they cannot take salary back. This is why they wont match Shabazz.
Doing s&t might be smart. Including Aldrich also.
In last Duncdon podcast Duncan & Leroux mentioned this s&t as making much sense.
The question is - will Minny prefer good PF or good PG.
Like Denver...

I like this idea too. I think, either way, Rubio is a very realistic option.
Moore + QPon + 1st for Rubio?
Moore + QPon + 1st for Rubio?

Denver sounds like they are trying to squeeze their way into the PG-13 game by getting Love which would be solid for them to get away from Faried.

2nds maybe, if they're getting Moore they aren't getting a 1st IMO.

Even better to me. I know they don't want too much, if any, salary back.

read an article this am that we're interested in Rondo when/if the Bulls waive him

Meh, I truly don't know how valid that is. There is some merit to it, maybe with Erman and Boogie, but I'd think it's more for leverage against Jrue
Posted on 6/26/17 at 12:44 pm to BallHawk
Not surprising even if true. He'd be cheap. Boogie likes him and respects him, if they both keep each other in check he's a positive on the team.. We would need spacing but it's not much worse than rubio

Who votes on the all defensive team?
whoever voted for Lillard and IT shouldn't be allowed to have a vote or even an opinion on anything to do with the NBA anymore.
