Disagree on Roth as a "great vocalist" although I loved his sound (and antics) and lived off Van Halen all through high school.
Agree on Rogers and Perry being at the top of the list.
Also agree and disagree with the one poster who said Daryle Hall. He's the best vocalist IMHO but at the same time he's not a "rock vocalist" IMHO.
Surprised no one's mentioned the Boston lead singer - at least honorable mention?
ETA: Also Mickey Thomas. Killer voice.

...and hence the embodiment of ignorance that is MTV, has been, is now and forever shall be, world without end, amen.
The fact that MJ could've ever been limited to strictly R&B/Soul Just fricking astounds me, and I am NOT a fan.
...Another voice deserving of mention (opposite side of the Paul coin, I guess) is Don Henly...cocksucker of a personality non-withstanding.
The 70s was the era of the singer, I guess. Or I'm just a biased Gen-Xer.

Jim Morrison is probably my favorite, though of course some of the others that have been mentioned like Freddie Mercury are also fantastic.
Also, taking a broad definition of "rock" I'd throw Elton John out there. Dude has some pipes.

There are so many that I appreciate and enjoy listening to.
Some that immediately come to mind are Layne Staley especially when Jerry Cantrell is also singing. Their voices blended so well with the mood of the music it was a beautiful thing at one time.
I also have to mention Chris Cornell with Audioslave. They made some great music as well.
My runner ups would be:
> Bon Scott. Incredible vocals for a raw rock and roll band from Down Under.
> And my high school favorite is Bruce Dickinson for my younger years. When I hear Aces High I can picture myself in that Spitfire diving down on the German bombers.
Many others.

I second Jim Morrison. He's always been my favorite.
I'm not a fan of real heavy rock music.
Bob Seger
Gregg Allman
David Gilmour
are some other favorites.

Justin Hawkins of The Darkness
In terms of pure voice talent and range he's right there with Freddie Mercury

Tommy Shaw and Ian Gillan not mentioned.

Both John Lennon & Paul McCartney, for their versatility especially during the late 60's, have to be high on the list.

Always felt the same way - he is not a great singer or frontman, but he just might have been rock's ultimate showman.
