The seven U.S. Navy sailors that had been missing after the U.S.S Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel have been found dead.
The crash happened early Saturday morning off the Eastern coast of Japan, and left a large puncture in the ship, flooding the compartment where the sailors' bodies were recovered. The crew managed to keep the ship from sinking, preventing further loss of life.
This loss is something we all feel."
—Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, commander of 7th Fleet.

I just can't believe this. Did the person watching radar fall asleep or what?

I still don't understand how this could have happened given how many people aboard are responsible for making sure this doesn't occur. A dozen people must have overlooked their duties.

Trump will make a statement about this soon. He's just got to tweet "witch hunt" a few more times first. Priorities and such...

This exact scenario was my biggest nightmare about sleeping in berthing 1 on a DDG. I'm sickened that this happened.

What was the flag of the other vessel? I wonder if that ship was passing close and suddenly turned. They would have passed each other on the right and if the container suddenly turned to starboard?

I've navigated a ski boat drunk on a crowded lake on the 4th of July and they can't manage to miss a ship on the open sea with millions of dollars of navigation equipment?
