Road and Saltwater,
Have you see the track of the container ship before its port side bow and bulb hit the starboard side of the Fitzgerald?

From what was recorded by satellite, it was NOT on a straight course but had several (more than two) 90 degree and one 180 change before it hit and the speeds of those didn't indicate a slow down. It seems to have hit the Fitzgerald from a relative bearing of 135.

At what point does a ship decide that the other ship is so erratic that it is unpredictable? What does this do the General Prudential Rules?
Are ship to ship communications stored?

From every model I've tried, I can't see how this was an accident.

What was the flag of the other vessel? I wonder if that ship was passing close and suddenly turned. They would have passed each other on the right and if the container suddenly turned to starboard?
This to me sounds like the most reasonable explanation.

USS Belknap CG-26, 1975.

USS Bordelon DD-881 1976.

Both were involved in collisions with USS Kennedy.

I took this picture of Belknap in Rota in November, 1975.

I saw the Bordelon all smashed up the next year in Portsmouth, England.

It was Philippine.

I wouldn't read that much into that, many times ships are registered in a place with low friction/regulation.

To op, completely inexcusable and a tragedy. I feel for those sailors and their families, and friends.

very interesting... wouldn't be surprised if the container ship's crew ends up facing some kind of charges

I read that they wouldn't release the dead sailors names until all family has been notified.

I see that one sailors name was released. Sad.

I still don't understand how this could have happened given how many people aboard are responsible for making sure this doesn't occur. A dozen people must have overlooked their duties.

I haven't read the article but is it possible the civilian vessel experienced steering issues and caused the accident?

Surprised at this point in time the destroyer didn't fire upon the ship once it came inside a certain perimeter, given the high threat of terror they face. Surely the destroyer was aware of the ship's proximity.

That's why they have radar
radar isn't magic.

I was on the Snoopy team of the USS Shoup (DDG86). You would probably be shocked at how many ships are spotted by eyeballs before radar.

I am wondering too...isn't a Destroyer by definition supposed to be "on guard" 24/7/365?

Trump will make a statement about this soon. He's just got to tweet "witch hunt" a few more times first. Priorities and such...

You want to talk about priorities?

Seven US Sailors lose their lives in a horrific accident, and all you see is an opportunity to bash Trump with some lame arse twitter joke.

Never looks good on the navy ship when they're hit on the starboard side like that.
