It's one of the crayfish snakes in the genus Regina. What is your location? I'm leaning toward glossy crayfish snake, but it could be graham's crayfish snake. I'm not really very familiar with these.

Thanks for the help, what did you have to do?

You need to copy the "Image URL" not the imgur url
If on Chrome, right click on the picture, "copy image address," then post that in the IMG window on this site.
(it should be a normal looking URL but ends with .jpg)

Looks like an eastern black and yellow dead snake. I can tell from the markings and the severed head.

Because he was 1' away from my one year old and I didnt know what kind of snake it was, I also have two small dogs running around. I saw him earlier that day but decided to let him go because it was just me, but I guess he decided to hang around my house.

That's a glossy, the Graham's doesn't have the black back. The glossy will make you shite your pants at first glance, most think it's a cottonmouth lol

how do you tell the difference between a crayfish snake and a yellow bellied water snake?
Posted on 6/12/17 at 9:36 am to LoneStarTiger
Mostly, the markings on the bellie, but the head has a different look as well.

When I looked it up after letting it go the first time, this is what I thought it was. I wasnt taking the chance with my son and dogs playing around.
