Wasn't there a row over two-sport athletes, as well?

Football SHOULD get anything they ask for.....they bring in 100 million a year

I love track and field and watch every meet I can. However, I agree that it's not a sport that a lot money should into since there's no return on the investment. Championships are always great but it's all about football, men's basketball, and baseball.

Disagree for a couple of reasons.

First, when you have without a doubt the best coach and program already established in this sport and a proven success, you at least do the minimum to stay competitive with facilities and pay to that top coach.

Secondly, whether you are an ardent fan of Track & Field, the national press and presence it garners pays dividends to the overall lLSU name brand well beyond the gate receipts at track meets. If and when the SEC and national track meets hit the TV networks, I watch. Also, there are more than a few key football athletes who make recruiting decisions based on the quality of our track program. It's a great talking point for recruits regardless of whether they end up being two-sport athletes or not.

It's not like a few million $$ one-time investment is going to put any type of dent to the football program - and the indoor facility has multiple uses beyond just LSU track.

fair point, but where does it end, $15M for gym, $12M for tennis, $4M for softball, etc...we all want to win all we can in minor sports but not at expense of major sports, however, the $$$ is mostly form one pot, sure there are people who give to Softball who would never give to Football, but in most cases all this $$ is coming from private donors and Football is #1 to them...

If it meant gym team would go back to being average in SEC like most of past 40 years (UF, AL, UGA all won multiple NC's and double digit SEC's before we ever won sec this year) and we won 1 more football game per year last 5 years would you do it? It's a tough call...same with track or any other minor sports...
UGA wins in Tennis because they pay big $$$ for facilities coaches etc. Auburn swimming, UGA gym (until coach retired after winning so much), SC, UGA equistrian NC's...

with exception of UF, all SEC teams have to pick and chose-not enough $$$ to gave the top tier in all sports...

How long was Pat Henry here? He probably had 15-20 years in the Teacher's Retirement System & could "retire" from LSU and draw a decent amount from that plus a full salary at a new place.

Doesn't always have to be some super-secret intrigue.

There are good reasons to "invest" in sports besides ROI based on revenues.
Ask Stanford (Which wins the all sports trophies years in and out) or the Ivies (which have incredibly high student participation %'s). Just spit balling here, but it's possible these schools could teach LSU a few lessons about the benefits of a well rounded education experience. They seem to think this approach improves alumni giving and growing an endowment.

nitwit,

very valid points, well said, our endowment is horrible and while we will never have what the Ivy's. Stanford have (I feel safe saying never), top 10 national schools have VERY high part. rates in sports...it is part of a great all around education..

I don't think anyone is claiming that LSU doesn't invest in athletics or only invests in football. There is a major difference between not investing in a non-revenue program and refusing to meet extraordinary financial commitments in a non-revenue program.

A&M made Henry a Godfather offer and LSU refused to meet it. LSU still maintains a reasonably successful track program.

So losing money without winning championships is better than losing money while winning championships??? Interesting. Does A&M profit from their T&F programs??

I am sure A&M loses money on track, too.
But having the university and its students associated with championships is good for the institution in ways that per sport bean counting will never recognize.
Just one example is that there is actually a competition among top schools for best students and faculty. An overall record of high achievement can be a factor in this type of competition. Status sells.

Because skip couldn't get a track camp for the AD established like he did with baseball, so he didn't give a shite about Track.

Is this the thread where we pretend to care about track?

If I'm the AD,I don't let my multiple national championship coaches leave. I would invest in their programs and facilities especially if they've won 20 national titles. Really dumb by Skip imo

I think you have to consider what these facilities like A&M and Arkansas bring to the University other than Championships. It brings national coverage to their university with big time meets they are able to host: high school championships, SECs, NCAAs, professional meets. Young athletes that are interested in collegiate track watch these and want to go there.

LSU hosts 1 or 2 indoor track meets per season, but look at the schools that attend them: SELU, Tulane, Southern. These meets are a joke to LSU athletes and there's no coverage for good reason.

Also, if you haven't been to one of these meets at A&M or Ark, you'd be surprised how many fans attend.

I agree and II think that most people often do not consider all of the intangible benefits that people are mentioning in this thread. It is not always about what you see on paper. I can't tell you how many times I'm watching something on national tv and they say "so and so from LSU". You could go on all day listing these types of things and for what Pat Henry was asking for, someone really screwed up.

It is also a proven fact that athletes in these olympic sports go on to have strong careers and are more willing to give back to the University than non athletes.
