Budget documents obtained by The Washington Post paint a bleak picture for many federal education programs: The newspaper reported on Wednesday that President Trump’s administration plans to cut them by a total of $10.6 billion. The proposed education budget would cut spending on programs in secondary education in order to funnel some of that money into school-choice programs, which have long been a major focus for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

In terms of money for higher education, the proposed budget would reportedly cut funding in half for the federal work-study program, and would sharply reduce grants focused on career and technical education. The most drastic change, however, may be the budget’s proposed elimination of the public-service loan forgiveness program, which was initially designed to benefit people who work in the public interest.

A spokeswoman for the Education Department told the Post that the figures it cited were preliminary until they have been released officially, and the White House is expected to release the Trump administration’s full budget for the 2018 fiscal year next Tuesday. Until then, here are a few key things to know about the public-service loan forgiveness program, and its uncertain future:

Congress approved it in 2007 as a way to aid borrowers in public-service jobs.

Those jobs can include work for government organizations or tax-exempt nonprofit groups, among other employers in the nonprofit sector. To receive the benefit, borrowers must make 120 on-time monthly payments — in other words, at least 10 years of such payments — on their student loans while working for a qualified employer. The Education Department encourages (but does not require) borrowers to submit forms certifying that they work for a qualified employer in order to keep track of their progress.

This is one of those things that could turn the midterms to the Dems.

The swamp is getting nervous.

They will go into full anaphylactic shock once Trump's full budget is released.

What? They're just putting borrowers in the program with no verification that they qualify?

Would this include political workers for PACS, campaigns, etc.?

And I don't understand this. If people want choices, why would EXTRA federal money be needed? I thought the goal was for the federal government to limit its involvement in K-12 education, or at the very least, allow people to use the funding for alternative choices. Now they want more involvement?

I know some shitty public attorneys who could never cut it at a private firm who will pissed at this. They make about 50k a year but don't have to pay their 200k student loans they owe.

Because of this, i absolutely support cutting this program!

Of course. He does love the poorly educated, and he's determined to make the whole country that way.

This program took forever anyway. You have to make like 120 payments before its considered. Aren't most loans paid back after 10 years?

We should forgive their debts if they work for free. Otherwise, they should shut up.

I'd like to see cuts elsewhere. I'm not too keen on this idea.

I realize no one wants their ox gored but there's an awful lot of redundancy and waste that we could eliminate. This program is actually beneficial.

FWIW I wouldn't freak out about this because budgets are basically just signaling at this point, I doubt Congress will gut it. We all saw what happened last time when Trump proposed cutting NEA/PBS, soaked up some good press from his base, and then Congress patted him on the head and said "that's nice dear."

Why not do the smart thing and do something about the ridiculously inflated tuition prices?
