M&P Shield break in

I'll preface this by saying I own both a M&P 9C and full size. I've had them for several years and had no issues with them at all.
I took my new Shield out yesterday to shoot for first time, this was after a good cleaning.
When I pulled the slide back it got stuck in the open position. I had to bang it with the but of my hand to make it close. Then I tried to put some rounds through it. First magazine the slide stuck open four times, each time I had to bang the slide to close it. This not a FTF or FTE, the slide is simply stuck open. Long story short.... this continued (less frequent) as I put more rounds through.
It wasn't until after 100 rounds+ that I was able to shoot an entire magazine with the slide sticking.
All total I put about 250 rounds through it with less and less problems.
Has anybody else had this experience? I did a internet search and saw where a few folks had same problem but it was when the Shield first came out.
I'm going to clean it again and shot it some more but I'm a little concerned. This was to be my main carry gun and failing just once could be a problem.
I plan on call S&W and see what the have to say.

That's odd. The slide on mine works perfectly, but I haven't shot it yet. I will shot it tomorrow morning. Report back on what S&W have to say. I'm curious.

Never with a new gun. Did you check the slide and frame for signs of wear? Any shiny spots through the finish? Glock uses a copper anti-seize compound that they recommend you don't clean off during initial shooting. Don't know if your pistol had the same or similar.

I remember reading stories about this on the S&W forums. Not sure what the answer was but I do remember reading it.

Yes. I took it down and checked for wear...didn't notice anything.

from another forum...
quote:
It is not a slide release, only a slide lock back. Pull back slightly on the slide and release it. I have seen on other blogs that forcing the slide lock down to release the slide will wear the metal to a point where it won't hold the slide back at all.
With an empty magazine, the slide release will not work with one thumb unless you pull back on the slide. In fact, it's nearly impossible to drop the slide unless you pull back on it first. With a loaded magazine, the slide release works easily with just one thumb. The slide lock lever sticks into the magazine well. When the magazine is empty the corner of the follower pushes up on the lever. That is how the last round hold open works. When you try to push the lever while there is an empty magazine in the gun you are fighting both the magazine spring and the friction between the lever and slide.

I saw this also. I tried pulling it back, won't move. The problem is the slide sticks in the open position after firing a round. It happened four times with the first magazine.

There's a video a dude made on how to fix it. Uses only sandpaper. Give me a second and I'll post it

Is it your grip? Only takes a few thousandths of a second during recoil to touch the slide lock unintentionally.

I tried to use my thumb to release the slide a few times and its extremely difficult. I have somewhere between 500-1,000 rounds through my Shield and I feel like it feeds better now. I would like to install the Apex trigger kit and polish some things to make it shoot a little better.

Not the grip.. it happened too may times. First fifty rounds I would guess the slide stuck open 15/20 times. As mentioned it took over 100 rounds that I was able to fire a complete magazine with out the slide sticking.
edit...
Just got of the phone with S&W they said to send to back. Will update when resolved.

This is the only remedy I would consider for an EDC.

Some handgun manufacturers (e.g. Kahr) will tell you that a break-in period of 200-300 rounds is necessary. S&W isn't one of those companies.
If a Shield needs to be broken in, sumpin' must be "broken" (as in out-of-spec).

I finally got my Shield back from S&W. I'm a little miffed. The only note they included was "fixed slide". No mention of what caused the problem or what they did to fix it. I took it out yesterday and put 50 rounds though it and it functioned fine. I will fire it some more when I get more time.

Y'all clean these things way to much.
Took mine out the box. Got some steel cased ammo and shot about 100 rounds with no problems what so ever.
Ill go dump some more rounds through it another day.
I'm not cleaning it though thats for sure. Not for a while anyway.

3+.
I don't know what's wrong, but there can't be ANYTHING wrong w/ a gun for cc. This doesn't sound like a break in issue.

Break in was probably the wrong wording. Point is on the first day to shoot gun I experienced the noted problem. I sent the gun back with a very detailed explanation of the problem. They sent it back with the note,
Evaluate/repair
Repair slide
Passed range testing
Nothing more. I didn't have time yesterday to shoot it more than a few rounds. Will do more soon.
I plan to call S&W on Monday to see if I can get some kind of report on what was problem and how it was fixed. Not much more I can do.
