Devils advocate: How easy is it for felons to find work?
That's one of the main problems in our country (drugs) and with certain communities. Dealers are already lazy enough and manipulate the system. This will be looked at by those types as money in the bank.
Eta - I don't agree with the program at all though. On the basis of "you did the crime, now you do the time." Becoming a felon has consequences beyond jail and parole or probation. Shouldn't be rewarded in any way. Go work a physical labor job or something.

Amen. Being from Texas, I always find it very hard to believe how many of my republican friends from Louisiana support TOPS. TOPS is a joke that drains LSU of critical funds it could use to improve its' faculty and facilities. The standards need to be something along the lines of a 3.5 GPA and 27 ACT to get any funding from the state.

It's crazy there is a one year ban on drug offenders getting food stamps, but not for violent offenders. They did their time, let's not set them up for failure.

How bout no food stamps and no tops.

While I certainly believe there is a need for food stamps, etc for families, I'd venture a lot abuse that assistance program.
Whereas TOPS should be looked at as an investment, not assistance program.
2 completely different programs with 2 different long term outcomes IMO

I said most. Most drug felonies are possesion, or Marijuana distribution.

The cost of the Food Stamp benefits, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is paid by the federal government, with the state having to pay only a portion of the cost to administer the program. Thus, it cost Louisiana only $2.6 million annually to administer the Food Stamp Program that provides over $1.1 billion in food stamps to Louisianans annually. This is money that quickly goes into local economies as recipients buy groceries for their families.

This is embarrassing though. I think the number of food stamps should be cut drastically, I just dont think people with drug felonies should be singled out.

As others have said, FS are funded by the Federal government while TOPS is State....but don't let facts stand in the way of outrage that supports the narrative ....
The Rule about drug felons came into being as part of the reforms under Clinton and was mainly to support the narrative.
Murderers, Rapist and Child Molestors could get benefits!!!! But God forbid someone who was caught with an ounce of weed
Get fed.
It's good that the rule is being rescinded. There is a lot of fraud in the food stamp program but this rule doesn't stop it. At the same time it denies some legit folks who need it.
As long as someone has "paid their debt to society" why continue to punish them?

It's less than other states. Florida is around 3b. It's still only about 1% of allocated taxes.

Care to backup your ridiculous statement with an actual law and penalty?

for a "red" state, Louisiana sure loves the "chicken in every pot" approach to free college.

Poss of an oz of weed isn't a felony in 95% of the US today.

I just copied and pasted it. The amount the state pays for stamps is less than the state subsidiaries for Exxon, one of the most profitable companies ever.

I wasn't saying it about the product being bought.

Are you seriously this ignorant? You don't get a felony for possession for personal use unless it's your 3rd or 4th if not more time for drug related arrests. That's not how it works and hasn't in a long time. You don't get a possession felony for a bunch of dime bag arrests.
Just because a guy gets arrested for selling weed, doesn't mean that's all he sold. I've never been into much drugs but I drank and partied enough to see plenty of drug transactions through friends, and almost every one of them the dealer had all kids of crap. They don't just sell weed and it's dumb to think that.

Seems to me the tops subsidy would raise tuition costs.
