Not sure why so many people are knocking Mobile. Stay downtown at the Battleship hotel- go to Bellingrath Gardens (stop on your way into Mobile), walk around Dauphin Street, go to the battleship, definitely go over to Fairhope. Stay out of West Mobile and you'll enjoy yourself.

I'd go to Mobile, especially if you like golf. Plus you could always ride over to Pensacola and check out the Naval Aviation museum.

Beach time and swimming? Mobile.

Entertainment and food? Galveston

Little of both I guess. More enticed by the beach now hearing everybody talk about how nasty Galveston's water is.

It's true. The water is not attractive. The beaches get better (and less crowded) as you drive west on the seawall, but the water doesn't really improve until Corpus.

But there is significantly more stuff to do, and better places to eat, in Galveston.

Well luckily it isn't far. Honestly, the best part about Mobile is where it is located. It's kind of sad, but being so close to other major cities and attractions makes it bearable.

Orange Beach - 1 hour
Pensacola - 1 hour
Destin - 1.5 hours
New Orleans - 2 hours
Birmingham - 3.5 hours
Baton Rouge - 3 hours
Atlanta - 5 hours

I was in Mobile last week. Stayed at the Battlehouse. Hung out on Dauphin St. I don't do the beach, so water quality is not an issue. I assume you could go out to Dauphin Island. Houston has the Astros tho.

I don't recommend this. Dauphin Island is a total dump.

I agree on that. Location is Mobiles best quality. Great launching pad. I thought about buying an old property close to Dauphin St. Not sure why the city doesn't promote that more.

Yeah surprised there are so many votes for Galveston. I think there is a lot of nostalgia there from posters' childhoods, because Galveston sucks.

Why is that a problem?

Destin is maybe 5 hours, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is 4 hours. If you were willing to drive the 5 hours to Galveston, why not go 5 hours east?

Stay at the Battle House downtown Mobile. Friday night Sister Hazel at the Steeple or Black Jacket Symphony (Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours”) at Saenger Theater. Saturday morning walk to Callaghans for brunch then sit by rooftop pool and enjoy some beverages rest of day. Hit Dauphin Street that night. Sunday morning grab coffee at Serdas then hit the road.

If you're a baseball fan South Alabama is good baseball as are the AA Mobile Baybears

Enjoy your stay

There are actually some really quality new restaurants that have opened up recently in downtown Mobile.

If you go to the beach, Sturgill Simpson is playing at the Wharf Saturday night in Orange Beach

I completely believe you. Tillman Fretitta has just thrown so much money into the entertainment and hospitality aspect of Galveston since Ike. The beaches suck! Galveston is not gonna shake that rap. So he put money into everything that may distract you from that.

His restaurants are very average, and I wouldn't recommend them. But local joints pick up that slack well. Moody Gardens property is great, the Strand is a good shopping and nightlife area, most of the seawall attractions and shops are new and/or renovated. The fishing is still really good, surf and charters. And its a good walking area.

Disclaimer: I also look at all this from the eyes of a parent of two young kids. That influences my opinions alot.

I can do a weekend in Galveston. Between Brews Brothers, Beerfoot, Mosquito Cafe, Farley Girls, some downtown hopping when I'm drunk.. that's 1-2 days. I'll hit Specs and spend the sun-hours at the pool. But after that I'm bored.

EDIT - Oh, the rooftop bar at The Tremont House is nice for a drink of two. And there's a good hole-in-the-wall bar, Jack's Pub on Post Office St.

Fairhope. Stay at the Grand. Enjoy the bay, the fake beach, the pool, and the bar. Golf across the street. Great seafood all around.
