Hypothetical worst case scenario: Brees doesn't resign with us in 2018

Say we have some bad injuries and bad breaks AGAIN, giving us a 7-9 or 8-8 season.

Both Brees and Payton leave.

Where does the team turn to at HC and QB? Do they trade away a ton of future first round picks to move up and take Josh Allen? Try to get in on the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes? It's a QB driven league as we all know and if we fail to make the playoffs then this could be a likely scenario.

I actually think locking down a future QB is more important than HC, so what would you rather the organization do in the event Brees doesn't retire here? Cousins? Josh Allen? Some other QB?

Payton wanted Mahomes, so why would he leave?

But in your hypothetical, We would look for a new HC from one of the coordinators right now.

Kirk Cousins would be a band aid on a severed limb. Draft one and hope he works out. Very few FA QBs are worth signing.

Hire Payton to be a QB coach. Salt in the wound.

I assumed Brees' fate walked hand in hand with Payton's.

If we make playoffs then they both stay and we won't have to worry for 2-3 more seasons but if we don't I think they're both out.

And this does seem like a good crop of QBs with Allen, Rosen and Darnold

Replacing Brees with Kirk cousins would fall into the best case scenario column.

Why Josh Allen and not USC and UCLA QB?

Everyone assumes Payton and Brees are tied at the hip.. my completely uninformed opinion is that their relationship ain't what it used to be.

Either one of those guys would work too.

Allen

Rosen

Darnold

I want to see what Kirk does this year. If he has a great year he will command top dollar.

I like the kid from oklahoma! Now thats a quaterback! Tought, Rocket Arm, will run and isnt slow.. Then he went back to school to perfect his accuracy.. Trade up for him and i think he learns the playbook pretty quickly!

Teddy Bridgewater might be a free agent. Vikes didn't pick up his 5th year option

maybe he can pull a Brees and come to New Orleans for redemption after his injury.

I'll be honest and say I was a little upset that the Saints signed Brees over Culpepper in 2006. I remember thinking why sign the guy with a hurt throwing shoulder over a guy with a hurt knee?! Obviously I was dead wrong.

Bridgewater's knee injury was much much worse than that, so I don't see him coming back to a high level. But I have been wrong before.

oh I agree it'd be a risky move, but it's worked out for us before.

I'd rather Brees finish his career here though

Payton doesn't leave but instead goes and gets Matthew Stafford. We win two Superbowls and Stafford becomes "elite".

Smartest and safest play even though it would cost us out of our arse would be Cousins sweepstakes. He'll probably get like 35 million a year somewhere but hey, it's better than taking a gamble in the draft. That's one position you could be looking for a good QB for 20 years. I'm not a huge fan of Cousins but you can't deny his production. I don't think we'll ever win a SB with him but he'll keep you competitive every year with a good offense. I've always seen Cousins as a great fantasy QB meaning he's money until it matters the most. He's just not that great in the biggest stage and clutch moments. The fact Redskins never signed him to a long deal tells you all you need to know about him.

Even in a worst case scenario we probably won't suck hard enough to have a crack at the top QB without giving up a ton. We'd probably get a placeholder, suck really hard in 2018, and hope for a top 3 pick?

Agreed, guy throws an accurate ball and has played well on a very avg team.... I would take a known commodity like Cousins in a heartbeat.

Isn't this Jimmy Garoppolo's last year of his contract?

If we go (7-9ish) go the Cleveland route and add your pieces in the 2017 draft let chase daniels take the helm in 2018 and acquire Shea Patterson/ Lamar Jackson at the top of the draft.
