Mt Rushmore is incredibly overrated. Every picture you can look at online is a better view than what you see in person.

What? I disagree on the view thing.
I was there a couple weeks ago and the viewpoint is practically right under the monument.
Overrated as a whole, yes.

People were swimming in the water last April in Pacific City.
Yeah, maybe some, but most were not. It can be a bit uncomfortable. Like hypothermia uncomfortable.

I'm not going to call any of these "most overrated ". This list is just for a location that I didn't see the big deal sometimes, or at all.
1. Gatlinburg
- spent three hours in Gatlinburg and was so done. Nothing to do except spend money. We spent a week in a cabin five minutes from the town and hardly went into it. The entire week was spent hiking and in the Smokies.
2. Las Vegas
- unless you enjoy spending your money, you are over this place in about two hours. It was a good airport to fly in for hiking Zion and southern Utah.
3. Coney Island
- not overrated, but a disappointing site after a one hour subway ride. It was gross.
4. Prince Edward Island
- wasn't a whole lot to do or see. There's like one town. We basically sat in a beach house for three days. Food scene was insane. Every village had some amazing taverns and local restaurants.
5. San Antonio
- just because I need 5. San Antonio is a huge city and while the Riverwalk and Alamo are awesome, that's it for San Antonio. Everything else is outside the city. The hill country, German towns and fishing in the gulf kicks butt. I saw San Antonio in a day. Could say the same thing about Atlanta.
A place that was amazing beyond my expectations
Cleveland- art museum, 2 HOFs, Christmas Story house, National Parks, it was an awesome 2 days.

The Alamo is a glorified gift shop in its current state

Like I said, though.. My vacation is basically doing the same things I do on the weekends, just in a much nicer place with much better options.
I'm in this camp... not much of a sight seeing, for the most part...
Cities:
Las Vegas and Orlando. I have been many times for work and my return flight home can never come fast enough...
Places in cities:
Bourbon St.
Beale St.
Navy Pier
Also, I was recently in Monterey, Ca and was really disappointed...

How come? I spent 3 days in the Carmel area last year and loved it. We only spent about
5-6 hours in Monterey though.

Not sure why you think anyone thinks highly of Gatlinburg for it to be even overrated. It's pretty commonly known to be an awful redneck tourist trap. People go there for the Smokies.

This. If you are renting a cabin and hanging out in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge - you're doing it all wrong. The only (emphasis added) place I'll go to is Smoky Mountain Brewery to fill up a few growlers. When we head to the Smoky Mountains, we are out hiking, fishing, and kayaking all day and then we head back to the cabin to relax, cook, and have some wine and beer. Even on nasty weather days, we'll take it easy and hang around the cabin.

For me:
1. Navy Pier
2. Sunset Strip - I bet in ints heyday it was cool, but GnR and Motley Crue aren't playing at the Whisey and Roxy anymore.
3. Mackinac Island - I loved it as a kid. I'd go back, but no way would I go in the summer months. It gets entirely too congested and the entertainment options don't really appeal to me anymore.
4. Nashville - and I live here. Demonbreun, Midtown, and lower Broadway do nothing for me. 12 South has gotten entirely too congested. I like it here, but I'd be disappointed as a tourist staying for more than a couple of days. That said, the city is growing and getting better as we speak. It'll be a lot more fun and interesting 5-10 years down the road.
5. Charleston - for as much hype as it gets, it was a letdown. I'll stick with New Orleans any day.
