Mad Dog Russo's ESPN/NBA Rant - "The Blank has hit the fan"

Anybody who heard the opening show monolague today was in for a treat.
Layed out exactly how greedy these leagues are and how stupid espn is for forking over $12 billion simply for the NBA.
"Ed Werder and Jayson Stark's salary are going right into Mark Cuban's pockets"
"If you want hockey or baseball coverage from ESPN from now on... Good luck."

yeah those bastards they should have told ESPN "look we see your offer of $12 billion, but will accept $9 billion because we don't want some writers and on air personalities to lose their job in a few years"

The show is live right now on XM

The leagues are businesses. They're not supposed to maximize their profits just so Ed Werder and Jayson stark can keep a job? ESPN made a bad deal in a changing industry. That's not Mark Cuban's fault

Thanks. He called in or something I thought it was Adnan today?
Edited: Nevermind I'm an idiot.

old mad dog may want to pipe down. Sirius is going to lose at a minimum 10 million subscribers if howard stern retires in 2020.
he may find himself out of work. Sirius doesn't really release who is buttering the bread over there, but I suspect mad dog isn't bringing in subscribers.

It's exactly what I said as well. They are paying NFL 2 billion per year to show highlights and Monday night football. The NFL has it's own network so if I want highlights and news I'm going there, not ESPN.
They over paid for all their rights. Plus they have The Longhorn Network, which I'm not even sure UT fans watch, and the SEC network, which I know for a fact nobody outside the SEC cares about.
They dug their own grave now these producers, reporters and tv talent (and their families) are paying for it.

espn doesn't hire broadcasters anymore and he basically runs that network. he's the face of it. he's like the andy cohen of sports.

Mike and mad dog really need to get back together

The only thing worse than overpaying for live rights is not having them. CBS Sports net, NBC Sports net, FS1 will never get off the ground without the major sports.

This guy is ignorant. Salaries are a drop in the bucket. Say everyone fired today made 200K average, that's still probably only $30M cut per year with benefits.
That's nothing when compared to a 4B per year deal for NBA, NHL, etc.
These guys are people they just viewed no longer brought sustainable value to their brand, etc.

quote:Yea, but he's the outlier. Normally when guys leave, you don't hear much from them any more. They go to brands where you don't even know or care to figure out how to find them.
people shite on rich eisen so hard for leaving espn to go to the nfl network, but man what a good fricking career move that was.

Dog is a legend in NYC. He has his own channel. He isn't Stern but he's probably one of the bigger names at Sirius

I don't get how anyone can take more than about 3 seconds of that show.

yeah most guys can't survive without the brand recognition. they fail on any other platform.
rich eisen didn't leave for some nationally syndicated radio show though. nfl network wasn't a subscription on most cable packages and was nothing. they were channel 1,000,000. people thought (hey I did too) he was committing career suicide
glad it worked out. I like rich eisen.
