So, I'd like to preface this post with the fact that I am generally not one who bashes Mainieri. I think, overall, he's a pretty good coach. I think at just about any other program in the country he'd be considered one of the greatest coaches to step foot on campus.

With that said, I'm beginning to become very frustrated with his coaching and the performance of his teams. He's has had arguably the best overall recruiting program in the country the last 8 years and has grossly under achieved with the talent he's bringing in. Another thread likened him to Les Miles and I think I actually agree.

So, if it is indeed PM's time, where does LSU go next? Realistically speaking, Cannizaro and/or Dean are a few years away from being truly qualified for this big of a stage. The obvious name is Bianco. My point of discussion is, who else is out there besides the obvious names.

I personally would take a look at Holbrook over at USCe, Fox at UNC, McDonnel at Louisville, and a dark horse Whitting over at Houston.

Thoughts?

Bianco will not make regionals this year
Dean is not ready

Cannizaro is doing really good at MSU already and chasing that program's first national title is probably a lot easier than the pressure at LSU where even making Omaha is not good enough.

he's had damn good recruiting (for college). what i'm seeing is breakdowns in pitching, almost every one of our guys almost every game and breakdowns in hitting esp with guys on base. we are a bunch of slap hitters that can't hit off speed pitches, esp curves.

it's either recruiting or coaching. you pick.

Both of these wouldn't leave where they are now for LSU. They can win just as much where they are now and won't have to worry about people wanting to fire them after 5 straight national seeds. Not saying CPM is the answer at LSU. I think he was once and can possibly still be but my confidence is beginning to take a hit. What I am saying is if and when CPM is gone your not getting someone who is established at a place that is already set up to win national championships. Your going to either go get a young up and comer at a smaller school, dean for example, or an established guy that has some success at a power 5 school but doesn't have the resources to take the next step, CPM at Notre Dame for example.

Cannizzaro is winning the SEC with a team that replaced 14 guys and had 6 pitchers have Tommy John this year. What makes you think he's not ready for the SECw? He's literally winning it right now..

It does help eliminate candidates. I mean, we don't really want a coach that is intimidated by high expectations.

ETA: Tim Tadlock would be on my list of replacement candidates. (Not advocating that Mainieri be fired.)

This would be the most logical choice for an up and comer.

Sullivan has had arguabley the most talent in baseball since 2010 and has nothing to show for it.

Bianco is at a school that has poured resources into the program and facilities that are on par with LSU, he has 1 CWS appearance to show for it. For a school that expects CWS every year look elsewhere.

Holbrook has been a poor mans Smoke Laval, the bottom is starting to fall out this year.

Dean isn't ready, he will become a phenomal coach in due time but he just doesn't have the experience for such a high pressure situation.

Cannizaro has succeeded, he's your high risk high reward coach. But remember the longer you wait in approaching him the longer he'll have been removed from the LSU program.

Cannizaro is at State for the long haul if he has continued success. Cohen (AD) won't let anyone outbid him. We're about to break ground on the 31st nicest stadium in the nation behind the 30 MLB teams. He's chasing a national title for the first time at State, with fans that won't run him off for being a top 15 team...

I can assure you that we could match any offer y'all threw at him. This isnt football, coaches salaries in baseball are not based on market value such as football. The only way he'd leave to go back to LSU is for a "love" of LSU, but he has no personal connection to either LSU nor MSU.

You're telling me that MSU's renovation (which will be very very nice by the way) will compare to major league stadiums and will be far superior than any minor league facilities?

Never said it would compare to MLB stadiums, i said it'd be #31 behind them, and yes, to my knowledge, I have not seen a better minor league stadium. Then again, I'm not aware of what every minor league stadium looks like, but personally I have not come across one that will look better than the new Dudy Noble.
