It's a good track. I enjoyed it. But even the Real Estate tracks I like most don't get the blood flowing for me like the average WoD song, much less a Red Eyes. Different strokes.

The intricacy of Granduciel’s songwriting and production—the way his urgent, interior searching yields strange tapestries—isn’t immediate in the way, say, a punk-rock song can be. Rather than knock you over, it slowly fills a room, and lingers. Yet his work seems to communicate something vital about the internalization of modern life, the ways in which we now manage, negotiate, and curate expression before uploading it to one platform or another. That these machinations are laid plain—that this music does not aspire to spontaneity—makes it feel more true.

A Deeper Understanding is the War On Drugs’ second towering instant-classic album, and their best album by a distance. Right now, it’s my favorite album of 2017, and I’ll be pretty surprised if I’m not saying the same thing come December or a decade after that.

My goodness, that review was epic. I thought it was wrapping up at one point, then 15 minutes later I finished it. But it has my even more geeked to hear this album, which I didn't know was possible. I love reading that he thinks the non-singles are at least as good (and have more hooks) than the singles.

I've heard of the band before, but never actually heard their music. I always assumed that they were a hipster band. Just listened to "Under the Pressure" and it was fantastic. Best way I could describe it would be a modern version of The Cure. Just beautiful music. I kept wanting to move on to the next song, but didn't want to stop listening to this one.

Now listening to "Red Eyes." Someone earlier in the thread said that the group was Americana, but I don't hear that at all. I associate Americana with Whiskeytown/Adams, Sturgill, Isbell, Bingham, Lucero, etc... this isn't anything like that.

OK, listening to "Thinking of a Place". Sounds very Ryan Adams-esque. GREAT song.

I'll stop posting about my thoughts now. Will finish up saying that I'm thrilled to have been introduced to this group. After Isbell's latest album being a disappointment, I'm happy to have 4 albums to replace it with. But now I'm pissed that I apparently have to wait 3 years before the next one.

Lost in the Dream and A Deeper Understanding sound nothing like the first two albums fwiw

I found Slave Ambient OK, but fell in love with the band after hearing Lost in the Dream. Absolutely perfect album. Wait til you hear An Ocean Between the Waves, Suffering and Dissappearing

From what I've heard of the newest, Pain and Strangest Thing are my standouts. You're about to be addicted. The replay factor is as high as any.

Springsteen, Dylan and Dire Straits all mixed up and spit out into something modern and unique to our times.

Was worried that maybe they had released all of the "wow" moments but 'In Chains' might be the best track on the album. That melody and driving beat, goddam.

In Chains is such a banger. Hard to believe they released five singles, and that wasn't one.
