Weed & Feed Question...

First year in my new home and during the winter my back yard (backs up to a creek) has been taken over with clovers and such.
I hit it once already with Scott's Weed & Feed for St Augustine 2 weeks ago. It has helped some but it's still got a lot of ugly growth.
How often can I do it or does anyone have any other Recs??

Second the weed free zone. That stuff works great.

if you used a granular weed killer, you probably didn't get very good coverage. I would say your best bet is to spray some liquid as the others here have recommended (weed free zone or something similar). Also, most of what you are talking about will die as soon as it gets hot, so you may want to just mow until it dies off and then let the turf crowd it out.

Weed free zone would be great for clover, but it is so-so with the lespedeza. I have only found it at feed stores, not places like Home Depot.

Thanks for the replies.
Is Weed Free Zone also a Fertilizer or just Weed killer?

Post emergent herbicide. Not fertilizer.
If you are near Covington, LA. Simpson sod on hwy190 has the bottle with hose attachment that covers between 20,000 and 40,000 sqft about eight dollars cheaper than other places nearby.

May take more that a single application. Got it once then wait a couple of weeks. That should do it.

The bottle says wait 30 days before a second application.

I have never had much luck with weed and feed granual fertilizers. I just use normal fertilizer for the grass and some form of spray like others have mentioned above that will kill the weeds but not the grass.

Same here but I also use Amaze preemergent. Prevents all the grassy weeds from popping up.

You're just going to have to manage it with herbicides this year, hit it in the fall with a pre-emerge, and then hammer it with a weed and feed next spring.

Anybody use the new roundup for lawns yet?

Weed and feed is a preemergent, it prevents new weeds from growing. It does not kill existing weeds. Ideally you put down preemergent every 3 months to prevent new weeds from growing, it's especially important in the late fall and late winter to prevent winter and spring weeds. Once your lawn is in full Growth as long as you cut it at the right length (long and thick) this will prevent most weeds from growing. I just spray what few weeds I do get in the spring and summer or pull them.
So yeah, if you have a bunch of weeds now you will need to spray them. Generally sprays work by preventing weeds from obtaining water, so if it rains hard right after you spray you may need to spray them again.

Wrong! W and F has Herbicide in it that kills existing weeds as well as pre emergent herbicides.

W & F needs to be laid on a wet lawn preferably shortly before sunset so the lawn stays damp. Also don't use it if rain is expected after it is spread it will get washed off.

Really wish I saw this thread about 2 hrs ago before I got back from HD with a bag of Bayer 3n1. Just covered yard with it to fight stickers and thistle problem. Sounds like I need to spray as well for best/immediate results.

If the stickers are already formed (which should be the case by now), you're too late.
