About 20 years ago there was a DVD, a compilation of actress nude scenes, advertised on late night TV. I specifically remember seeing Reese Witherspoon (with her bare nipples covered by stars or something)
No one else remembers this. I can't even find a mention of it online.

For us Gen-X guys Phoebe Cates was a holy grail girl. She was gorgeous in a "girl next door" sort of way and was NOT someone you expected to do a topless scene.
Then Fast Times paid her a ton of money and she whipped them out. And being pre-internet, a lot of us weren't expecting it at all.
It would be the later generations equivalent of Britney Spears at this age being in a movie and just suddenly popping them out.
Or maybe Topanga for you young-uns

That makes no sense to me.
She was a nobody before this movie. Her movie career started that year. Her first movie, Paradise, is full of full frontal nudity of her. Fast Times came out the same year and was her second film.
She is nothing like Brittney Slears or Topanga getting nude, or Jessie Spano, which someone my age will remember.
Again, what was the significance of her showing her little tits as a nobody actress at the time that makes it so memorable?
Only thing I can think is since it was a high school movie and she was 17, it made you think maybe your fellow classmate might do the same for you?

Phoebe Cates had a good 10+ year run as a young actress model. She married Kevin Kline in 1989, which would have been at the peak of her young career. She was 26. They're still married, having raised 2 kids.
