True/False - Horizon would have been a better game if it wasn't open-world

True for me. This game would've really benefited from the Uncharted 4 treatment. Make each chapter/level a sprawling area filled with different machines, some logs and small things to do, and a main objective.
Games usually go open-world when developers know they have a shitty story and have to pad the game because it won't have much replayability. This game has a pretty kickass main story, but all of the pointless side quests, collectibles, corrupted zones, etc ruin its delivery. I'm nearing the end of the game (well I think I am because I got the point of no return warning) and last night I literally spent 5 hours cleaning up the flowers, vessels, figures, zones, and sidequests just for the sake of completion/platinum. There's no need for any of that shite and it really hurts the pacing of the main story. Yes, I know you don't have to do all of that shite if you don't want to
I really think this game could've been awesome with a 12-13 chapter, 15hr structure. Vary the biomes and enemy machines, carefully design each area and add some setpieces, and execute your narrative more effectively. Whereas Last Of Us has a ho-hum story and brilliant execution, Horizon is the inverse. Nails the story with ho-hum execution. Instead of 100 shitty sidequests, have 8-10 really good ones scattered about. Implement a NG+ that shakes up enemies, adds newer modifications, etc
I really think this structure would've moved the game from the "solid" category to the "great" category.

Then don't. This is all on you. Open world doesn't mean you HAVE to go crazy on exploring and sidequests. If the main story is your thing, then do that. To say something you voluntarily participate in detracts from the main game doesn't make sense to me. It's why I never bothered with the settlement crap in Fallout 4. I know I would have just bored myself to tears helping settlers and building my own place, effectively "ruining" the game for me. I ignored it, and the game was/is a blast.
If I want to make myself quit an MMO, I start going hard on the crafting/gathering classes. I love FFXIV, but spending hours leveling a leatherworker is a death sentence for me. I ignore it, I'm good.

It's a simple question addressing the allocation of resources. Why devote time/money to the most forgettable parts of the game when you could devote it to what you do best? Nobody is gonna remember finding that metal flower up in the snowy mountains or that vantage point in a tower. It's pure padding.
It needs more momenta like the escape section during the network takedown quest. Running/climbing while the Deathbringers unload on you. shite like that is what sticks.

You won't remember it. Some of my favorite moments with Skyrim were just finding random caves/temples/strongholds and exploring/looting for no good reason. People get into that.
If you don't like open world games, just say so. The game sold like hotcakes. There was obviously a market.

I don't disagree. Very different when it's spontaneous like that vs going to a point on a map to find an object for the sake of checking collectibles off a list

I put the game down for a bit, but from what I gathered from other players and reviews, a lot of the backstory, the underground facilities and whatnot, was interesting stuff. I obviously need to see for myself.

The logs are different. They are interesting, and I've listened to/read every single one so far. Seeing the marketing material for the robots in the Faro facility was awesome
Flowers, vantage points, metal vessels, corrupted zones? Padding.

I'm likely in the minority, but the way Uncharted makes it's levels is pure garbage IMO. I can not stand the linearity.

While this absolutely applies to 1-3, which I hated, I don't think you can really say that for 4. Plenty of wide open areas for plenty of different encounter possibilities

I know four improved upon it, but to advance the story in any way in Uncharted, which lacked any kind of sidequesting, you had to move forward in the right direction.
I'd personally rather do random crap like return a frying pan to an old lady in the Witcher, which is one of my favorite sidquests of all time, than have nothing to do but the main story in a game.

Witcher is a rare exception in terms of open world sidequest quality. The most random, seemingly stupid things become awesome/hilarious
Horizon is not that It's just pointless shite for worthless npcs with terrible voice acting and shitty rewards. Witcher's success lies in ability to make you feel like what you're doing matters.

Horizon does open world pretty well I think. The side quests are no more annoying or pointless than similar games. I actually think the side missions in Horizon are a bit better than games like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry. Horizon is not an RPG like The Witcher 3, but the way a lot of the side quests are presented, you have motivation for needing to complete the tasks.
The voice acting is atrocious though. While I appreciate the fact that I'm not hearing the same voice actors that appear in virtually every video game, most of the NPCs sound like random office workers they threw in front of a microphone.

I can see the argument and do think a lot of games would benefit from going to "wide linear" ala Uncharted 4. FFXV had no reason to be open world except to jump on current trends
Horizon did open world pretty well, though. Side quests weren't Witcher level but the writing was decent throughout. It puts some interesting spins on open world tropes like the tall necks as AssCreed towers and the cauldrons as optional dungeons.
Sure it didn't need vantage points and that stuff but I don't care about trophies and have never been a completionist so I didn't bother with that. It's there for everyone that does enjoy that stuff

It's essentially a peak Ubisoft game. Not really an rpg in an open world with collectibles and towers. It's a good game but there are quite a few better ps4 games this year.

I grow to dislike open world games more and more as time goes on.
Developers tend to stick to the same lazy tropes with fetch quests and collectibles. My experience is that there are pockets of interesting things surrounded by tons of filler.
I have not yet played horizon so I can't offer an opinion on it. I've come close to purchasing a few times, but I've got a massive backlog of games and horizon just doesn't seem that appealing to me.

Horizon is better than most open world games because the core gameplay is actually really fun. Just exploring and taking on random dinobots is great
