re: Why was Furniss' # retired before Walker?

Just glad they both had their jerseys retired and were alive and young enough to really enjoy it. As far as numbers go, I'd've liked to see what kind of numbers Walker could've put up if he were in the middle of the lineups Furniss got to play with.

Both were great hitters. Walker was as clutch as there was in big moments.
Both graduated.
You could have projected Walker's stats had he stayed to see how close they would have been. Walker likely bats >.400.
Dude had a .289 MLB avg which isn't too shabby. Eddie just didn't have the same level of success far enough in the minors.
I'll go with Walker>Furniss since he made the bigs and did it for 12 years.

Maybe the fact the Furniss earned his degree had a lot of weight.
At one point this was a requirement for HOF and retiring numbers I thought? Wasn't this reg recently removed?

Consider the source, R.Rantz the other nite, but Walker is working for the SECN as a baseball analyst & he & Jacob Hester are partners in a new WalkOn's in S.port. But as an aside, he married well, too. No pics beyond her seen standing next to him during the ceremonies.

if Walker played his senior year and improved his stats like Furniss did this wouldn't even be debateable. We have never had a more clutch hitter than Walker.

I agree. I remember a regional against S. Alabama (very good team) and we were trailing late...he hit a shot to CF in 8th or 9th to give us the lead or tie it up. I also saw him his freshmen yr in the dome at Winn Dixie showdown...I said that dude is going to be incredible

As mentioned above he is studio analyst for SECN and I caught the end of Tim Fletcher show the other day and I thought he complimented Walkers recent work as MLB analyst as well as his SECN gig.
The "ownership" of the walkons in SHV is a very minor bit from what I understand

This - at the ceremony Friday night, it was mentioned several times that Todd returned to LSU and graduated in '98.

No it's not. Look I was in school with Furniss and there is a reason he stayed four years and walker didn't . Walker drafted in 1st rd after jr year. Furniss was drafted in 14th after his. Sure MLB scouts don't know shite. Furniss benefited from the bats and some other things walker is a pure hitter Furniss was not
ETA.
Both are great tigers not bashing Furniss just being honest

"Not half the player Walker was"? Stroll around the HOF room at The Box & take a good long look at Furniss' SEC & LSU hitting records. Four yrs vs three years or not, Furniss could swing the stick & all the records he holds are legit. There is a good reason his number has been retired. Furniss made a conscious decision to go to med school vs the pros. Either way, both are great players, so why knock one to prop up the other?

Didn't knock anyone but you can't compare a 12 year big league career to never making it. It's a dumb debate. Both were great Tigers but if u can't see the difference u aren't looking. Furniss played first and hit in the most pro offensive time ever. Not bashing just being honest. U have ur opinion I have mine . Plus a year adds lot (60 plus games ) . He was never making the bigs .
