Mike Mayock says Saints are a nice fit for Pat Mahomes

If we get a DE at #11, I'd have no problem with Mahomes at #32 because there will still be some good CB's on the board at #42.

Texas Tech: Mahomes would fit nicely in New Orleans, or Arizona
Big draw: QB Patrick Mahomes
Attendance: Reps from 28 NFL teams attended the Red Raiders workout, per the school, including Giants coach Ben McAdoo, 49ers GM John Lynch and Seahawks GM John Schneider. Cowboys QB coach Wade Wilson was on hand as well.
The skinny: After Mahomes' 68-throw session, NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock, who attended the workout, said the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals would be two strong fits for the former Red Raiders star. Why? Because because it would afford him a short-term understudy role.
"Best-case scenario is he plays behind a quality starter for a year or two, a veteran. New Orleans, Arizona, one of those situations," Mayock said.
Might the two clubs see things the same way? Both traveled to Lubbock for a private workout with Mahomes earlier this month, and the Saints remarked to Mahomes about his impressive progress afterward. As for Mahomes' workout Friday, Mayock saw both positives and negatives.
"The big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make: 20-yard comeback, cover-2, throw in between the corner and the safety -- he threw both of those beautifully," Mayock said. "The deep, outbreaking routes where you really got to drive it, he was outstanding. Now, some of the throws he struggled with, I thought he was more concerned about his new footwork and mechanics and forgot to drive the football."
Mahomes was the unquestioned main attraction, as Texas Tech's other pro-day participants are considered fringe prospects. He went through passing drills only and stood on his combine testing. He met with McAdoo on Thursday.

At 11? I'll dropkick Mike Mayock in the head
At 32? Sure, if he's BPA.
At 42? Okay, that's cool.

He's gotta mean at #32. I can't see Mahomes at #11. And I don't think he's even the 32nd best player in the draft, but good QB's always get over drafted.

He's gotta mean 42. I think there is a chance that guys like Watson and Kaaya are there at 32.

Watson, Trubisky, Mahommes are all long gone before 32.

Saints need a QB, unless they are fine with Daniel starting. Cause if this season goes 7-9 again, I can see Drew wanting out. They would have had 4 years to fix a shite defense.

Not a QB in this draft excites me.

Mahomes will be long long gone by 42. Probably by 32.

if we dont pick Mahomes by 11, he is long gone by 32. Unless we trade up from 32 which is likely. Whether it be for Mahomes or someone else

As physically gifted as Mahomes is, he has a huge learning curve along with most of the other QB prospects in this draft. Bruce Arians just gave an interview on his evaluations of spread QBs. I'm guessing the QB Arians refers to in Pittsburgh is former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon.
quote:
Only one of the quarterbacks eligible for the NFL draft is ready to play right away.
That's the word from Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who addressed the draft class at the NFL's annual spring meetings.
"I’m not going to mention names," Arians said. "I think one of them is ready to start as a rookie. I think all the rest there are some really talented arms that need a year of learning how to play the position, especially at this level.”
quote:
One of the key traits Arians looks for in a quarterback is the ability to process information quickly and under duress.
"What’s my protection? Am I hot? Do I have a sight adjustment weak side? What’s the coverage? Who do I throw to in this coverage? That all happens in 1.5 seconds," he said. "If you can’t process that information, you probably can’t play.”
Arians also laments the changes in the college game to spread formations and calling plays quickly from the sidelines. That offense limits the number of plays a quarterback runs and complicates the transition to the far more complex pro game.
Almost all of the draft-eligible quarterbacks come from that system, where the emphasis is on pace and calling plays quickly as opposed to pre-snap reads for coverage and protections. One element of the transition that Arians said is among the most difficult is something that from the outside seems natural: calling plays from the huddle.
"[Spread quarterbacks] never got in a huddle [in college] and looked at 10 other guys who’ve got families to feed, and had to call a play," Arians said. "They just look to the sideline, kick their foot and roll.
“That’s the hardest thing for these kids, to come to minicamp, get in a professional huddle and try to lead these guys. You have to give them a wristband because they can’t spit it out. Or you have to give them a wristband and then all the guys in the huddle get pissed off because he can’t call the play.
"I’m not making eye contact with you and you don’t have a helluva lot of confidence that I know what I’m talking about.
“We had a young guy in Pittsburgh who had all the talent in the world, but he could not call a play and he could not go to the line and use a snap count. It destroyed all of his confidence."

If other teams have similar evaluations, there will be several QBs who could fall unless teams take them early & allow a vet to play while the draft pick learns behind the scenes.

and on the other end of the specturm, some teams are so thirsty for a QB that they think they can mold anyone that has the physical tools. Mahomes wont last past 25 and will prob go in the top 15 imo

I am prepared for them to take a QB except with #11. They will be taken but I do not see any of them worth anywhere near that much. This class is reminding me of 2013. That one went #16, 39, 73, 98...
2013
1 1 16 16 E.J. Manuel Bills Florida State
2 2 7 39 Geno Smith Jets West Virginia
3 3 11 73 Mike Glennon Buccaneers North Carolina State
4 4 1 98 Matt Barkley Eagles USC
5 4 13 110 Ryan Nassib Giants Syracuse
6 4 15 112 Tyler Wilson Raiders Arkansas
7 4 18 115 Landry Jones Steelers Oklahoma

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Outside of Cam Newton, Mahomes is the only QB who absolutely gave LSU's defense fits. Our D chased him all over the field. His O-line would collapse he would scramble, and he would create. He threw under duress accurately and impressively.
28/56 370 yards 4 tds, 1 int
If he had had a decent O-line, the outcome of that game could have been very different.

He has put up those type of numbers week after week with no run game or defense. He carried the Red Raiders game after game. It's not only the numbers he put up though because a lot of it is system based but moreso his skill set & instincts. Mahomes has "it" on top of being physically gifted. He has also openly talked about the adjustment to the NFL & probably having sit for a bit to learn before playing. The guy is sharp for his age.
If he is there at #32, its a no brainer to take him. The organization spent 40+ years searching for the right QB. Mahomes has better physical gifts than Brees while possessing a similar mentality. The chance to have a talented young QB develop behind a future Hall of Famer is really rare & I would hate to see this opportunity go to waste. No fan should want the team wondering in the desert for another 40 years. Without a good/great QB, a team is going nowhere except top 10 in the draft every year.
