I've never owned a handgun but I've been looking at the shields. Is there a preference for the safety or non-safety version?

Many on here would say non-safety. Personally, I have the safety on mine and would get it again. You can simply turn the safety off when headed toward a situation or area that could potentially be trouble.

And the reason most prefer nonsafety is because you cannot just turn it off so simply when you are unexpectedly needing to use your weapon to defend your life. The safeties are an unnecessary step with these kinds of guns and a step that could cost you time and ultimately your life if forgotten when under stress or accidently not engaged under stress. If you are turning off your safety going into a situation you know you need your gun. You should not be going into that situation.

But as for never owning a gun before. I highly recommend something other than a small single stack like the shield. Look at a glock 19 and the M&P fullsize, h&k vp9 and buy one of those first or at the very least at the same time as the shield.

Well duh. Generally speaking, I mean areas which are more likely to have more people.
Actually, I keep it off 75% of the time when I'm carrying. But if it's in the house, the safety's on. And if we're walking in our favorite park, which is in the middle of an extremely affluent and safe area, then the safety is on.

See that causes inconsistency which greatly increases your chances of making a mistake thinking it's on when it's not or thinking it's off when it's on which makes it all the more likely for an accident or for you to mess up when under stress
Restating but there is no need for a safety on these kinds of guns.
Also if you are relying on your safety as a precaution for children(not saying you are) that's an even bigger problem.
With a gun like a shield not having a safety takes away all of those mental crutches and leaves you with the fact that the gun will not go off unless you pull the trigger.

No, no it doesn't. Or at least, shouldn't. If it does, someone's an idiot.

It's just like anything else, mental preparation and situational awareness. Something someone new to guns is going to work on anyway.

Again, I disagree. I follow every reasonable safety step under the sun. But having a safety is simply ONE more thing keeping my kid safe. And a safety is normally keeping a kid safe from negligence, or a mistake, on an adults part. I'm not perfect, and I havent done this yet, but I'll probably make a mistake someday that would put a gun within reach of a kid without fully realizing what I am doing. We all make mistakes on occasion.

I have laid out and presented the reasoning why the gun industry, police forces, special forces have shyed away from safeties on striker fired handguns. You can continue to ignore the reasoning or not. I'm not going to continue this back and forth.

No. Porting on a carry gun is ridiculous. Impossible to comfortable shoot from retention
