Maybe some good news at last...

Injured LSU reliever Hunter Newman appears to be on track to compete in LSU’s series against Texas A&M, roughly two weeks after it was revealed he had suffered a back injury.
“Hunter threw well today,” coach Paul Mainieri said before a Wednesday practice. “It went well today, about as positive as it possibly could’ve gone. We’ll see how he feels (Thursday). If he feels good, no setbacks, then he’ll be on the active roster for this week.”

Without hess available, we need newman

Beck would get some incredibly vital experience if he gets more of a chance to play. I love this guy!

Beck is getting plenty of opportunities already. At some point he will have a few bad outings and we will need to rely on other arms like newman and bain

Nice to see him making good progress in his recovery. Fingers crossed for a strong appearance against A&M.

So? If Newman is the savior you can bet your arse they will be in trouble.

Newman has been our best relief arm the past two seasons. So I'm not really understanding what you're trying to say. Is it because he had a couple rough outings this year and now he sucks? Maybe just maybe his back issues had something to do with his control issues. Just a thought
And I mean damn he still has a sub 2 ERA and hitters are hitting .233 against him. But yes let's not get excited about getting back one of the top arms on our staff

Fantastic! Gilbert and Newman could/should be among the best back end 1-2 punches in all of college baseball

I wrote out this response in the (now deleted) thread:
quote:This makes sense.
Mainieri said he didn't tell the media about AD's sore arm because he didn't want the information to end up as part of opposing teams' scouting reports. His arm is okay now and that's why he's been moved back to center field.
quote:It's the internet and it's not like I can post proof for obvious reasons. Like I said then, it's all "speculation" on our part when we share something like that. And I didn't even mention it until others brought it up first.
My apologies for having doubted you.

Really big news to get him back in the next week.
No idea if he's set on Newman in the closer role but that may potentially create a spot for Gilbert to be the setup man 1-2 times a weekend.

I don't hate the idea of using both as closers/setup guys depending on the starter. Newman would be ideal behind Lange since he's slower with both FB and CB which is much different than Lange's slider. While Gilbert closing out behind Poche/Walker would be a huge shift going from 88-89 to 94. Obviously, there will be bridge guys like Bain, Beck, TP, but I still think Gilbert and Newman can be successful closing things out. I also like Gilbert coming in mid-inning. Project has stats to show he's much better with inherited runners than Newman.

I guess Micah Gibbs didn't share that information in the Coaches Committee email.

I'm curious, what are your thoughts on how the season has unfolded and about Gibbs as a hitting coach?

He was last year. This year has been a different story.
Gilbert has allowed 3 of 5 inherited runners to score. Newman has allowed 1 of 6 to score. Both have 3 instances of inheriting guys on base.
Name Instances Inherited Scored Pct
Bain 4 6 0 100%
Reynolds 2 3 0 100%
Reese 1 2 0 100%
Peterson 1 1 0 100%
Newman 3 6 1 83%
Beck 4 5 1 80%
Gilbert 3 5 3 40%
Strall 4 10 8 20%
Frederick 1 2 2 0%
Norman 1 2 2 0%
ETA: Sorry about the format, I don't have access to an image hosting site.
