2016 GM engine with around 16k. Worthwhile to add a magnetic plug next oil change or is the filter getting everything that could be damaging?

I don't think anything small enough to get through the filter would do damage to the engine. magnetic drain plugs are so inexpensive that it would be hard to argue that it doesn't make sense to put one on, though.

have to say, it may be kind of cool just to see what it catches, too.

How much is it?

Does it give you piece of mind for that price?

Not really worth the money but then they are so cheap it's not going to hurt anything either. Better off buying a good oil filter cutter to look at what the filter is catching. About the only place a magnetic drain plug is worth a damn is on the differential.

You shouldn't need it on a late model engine. If you have metal in your oil, you will soon be replacing the engine.

Hum... never heard of this before. Off the cuff I'd assume the filter should catch anything that could be caught by the magnet; and I'd think that a magnet as small as the plug wouldn't be very effective.

However, could one attach a set of rare-earth magnets to the entire underside of the pan? That'd give a rather large surface area to collect material. But that's also give a large magnet to collect shite from the outside too.

Buy a quality filter and change it regularly.

If you are overly concerned, get a Used Oil Analysis done by Blackstone Labs (or similar) for that peace of mind backed by actual science and results.

You're debating on $3.25 instead of $2.75? Come on man

I always put them in the differential/transfer cases. Probably Overkill, but it definitely doesn't hurt anything to get more particles out.

If I recall I had a Chevrolet 2500 that came with a magnetic oil plug from the factory.

Only seemed to collect very very fine particles.

I recently installed a fumoto quick drain valve on a car of mine. Seems like more value for your 30 bucks than a 30 buck oil plug with magnet.

You're driving a truck worth $40 grand and worried about spending $35 for piece of mind?

I have heard of adding magnets (rare earth) to the outside of the filter. The plug magnets don't really pull the metal out, they just act as a tell-tale and let you see metal when you do changes.
