Welfare story of the day - am I wrong?

I'm in a rush to get home after work this evening and stop at the grocery store to pick some things up for the wife.
I choose the one line with only one person checking out. It's a mom and her two chunky daughters in public school uniforms.
Thinking I'm in like Flynn for a speedy checkout, I realize the lady is having some sort of issue with the bag of chips she's trying to buy. "Same thang happened las week too. I don't know why it does it but the las girl fixed it", she tells the cashier. Irritated, I try not to make it obvious that I'm looking at other lines to see which one I could escape to. Then, just as I grab my things to go to another line, the mom tells me I may want to try another one.
I get to the line right next to my old one and as my guy is ringing me up, I realize that the lady's problem is that the chips aren't ringing up as a qualified welfare purchase. I instinctively turn around to grab it and buy it for her (thinking of the embarrassment this lady must be experiencing) when I suddenly realize her kids are fat. I'LL BE DAMNED if I'm gonna contribute to her daughters' obesity. She clearly stated she bought them those greasy chips last week too! I quietly turned back around, paid for my shite with my debik card, and walked out.
So my intended good deed turned into a somewhat political statement/bad human thing. Am I a bad person? What would the OTdo in this situation?

Just a quick reminder, you still technically paid for them

Is this debik card better than a Black AMEX?

Same exact thing I told myself as I walked out.

So I guess you wanted us to know the lady and her overweight daughters were black
Way to be subtle Baw

I sure as hell wouldn't moan about it like a woman then ask the OT for ethical advice.

Should have grabbed smartfood popcorn for her instead

What was your hurry? Seriously, what life or death situation were you dealing with?

I think it was universally understood from the get go

I ran across the same thing about an hour ago, right down to the fat kids. I didn't pay attention to what the item in question was. The line was held up for 20 minutes. Pain in the arse.

Tangerine will be here any moment and call us all racists and point out he made a thread about Boston's drummer kicking the bucket during a cruise ship performance just to see if we'd rush to post in it like we do his race baiting threads and it proved his point when we didn't. (damn that was one helluva long sentence)

You did fine baw. There is a reason the chips didn't ring up as a welfare purchase.

Gosh, I wish I could read her thread on some black welfare forum about the patient cracker who had to change lines

The government should switch to a commodity system. Each family gets the essentials: milk, bread, eggs, cheese, a bag of leg quarters and some vegetables. If they want anything else, they should have to work for it.
On another note: I was in the grocery store this past Sunday. The guy in front of me has a dozen roses, a case of bud light and a few groceries and whips out a Louisiana purchase card. Then I saw him in the parking lot and he was driving a fairly newer model truck.
