This is me agreeing with the gadfly.

quote:Why are they asking other people to participate in this pilot program? Surely among Ms Li and the others in the Idea Lab there are four suitable back yards?
Mary Li, director of Multnomah County’s new Idea Lab, which developed the concept.

If you live in Portland, the Gov wants you to allow homeless people in your back yard
quote:oh, nevermind
The government is looking to solve the homelessness by offering tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners.

This is just a boondoggle to let people skim money. The units are going to cost $75000 each, for something you could buy from tuffshed for $4k. I live across the river from Portland and everyone in the surrounding areas knows Portland is full of some special kind of crazy. Lots of good food and beer though

What will be funny is all the neighbors will complain about finding used needles, beer cans, and trash on the sidewalk, late night parties, and unusual characters hanging out. The people who support the program will swear that the problems are exaggerated, and that the neighborhood is just the same as it used to be.
The liberals who are invested in the program will swear by it and everyone else will hate it. It will be just like the debate over refugees in Sweden.

Yeah and josh knows all about posting misleading thread titles to push an agenda. Listen to the man.

Then you wouldn't be a willing homeowner they are looking for.

How about the homeless live in the backyards of every government official/ employee?
If the govt. Employee wanted to do it then let them go for it. You're acting like they created some law that forces all homeowners to participate.
It's not a big deal. If you want to give it a shot then do so. If not, don't. Why should anyone, including govt. employees, be forced to enroll in an optional incentive initiative?

It worked out pretty well for that German teacher!

I guess their sidewalks are all filled. I have never seen more 20-something white homeless people in my life.

'Just because you don't have housing, it doesn't make you a bad person or more likely to be a bad tenant. In fact, you'd be a better tenant because you'd appreciate it,' said Becca Love.
In many cases, it does indeed mean all that. While there are some that wind up homeless without having drugs, alcohol, etc to blame, to think of them as the majority is to be purposely blind.
Anyone honest whose worked with the homeless will tell you that while many are grateful for whatever assistance they receive, their self-destructive behavior is usually the cause of their plight and it's not often that they change enough for them to become truly independent.
quote:
The families will receive social services that the county already provides to all homeless families they house, Li said, and they will pay 30 per cent of the rent themselves.
So if they fail to pay rent is the homeowner able to kick them out? Do they have to immediately get a new homeless tenant?

So can I assume that every inch of land in Oregon is occupied? Otherwise this is stupid.

It's an interesting idea. You point out some valid concerns, but maybe it will work. Why not give it a try?
Thats just dumb.
If you let a bunch of vagrants live in what is basically a 200sq ft shed with a toilet, in your back yard, you have to also accept anyone they want to visit them and maybe stay with them for a while, and maybe bring along a friend, and their pets. If they're homeless, who gets the electric,/water bill? Is it in their name? Property taxes?
To even think this makes sense on any level is nuts.

Still misrepresenting the content with your title quote: by offering tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners.
And? Whats your point supposed to be?
Posted on 3/21/17 at 8:22 am to Jjdoc
Would be my luck... Some white guilt neighbor of mine having a complete apartment complex for them in his backyard..

In Portland, they will try everything possible to help the homeless, except to hold them accountable.

If they change their mind...can they kick them out, or is there a binding contract?

Also, are all zoning laws governing what is required for habitation followed or do they get a special pass that regular taxpaying citizens don't get?
