Yes.
This movie is the cornerstone of my argument that Tarantino is a better writer than a director. He should write more and direct less.
If Tarantino had directed this, it would not be the masterpiece that it is.
Tarantino's writing style is kind of hard boiled Noir style, but his directorial style is too art house to really complement his writing style.
Scott absolutely nailed the tone of the script for this movie.
I think you're right when it comes to True Romance but QT is a great director in his own right.

You could make the opposite argument about Hateful 8. Brilliantly directed, not so well written comparatively

"Clarence Worley? That sounds almost like a n***a name."
Gandolfini is also excellent.

It's not the writing that's off (Hateful 8 is a brilliant screenplay IMO), it's the editing. Sally Menke died after Inglorious Basterds and as such, Tarantino will likely never make a great film again. Menke was the editor he so desperately needs.

exactly
QT has got a bad case of Oliver Stone disease. Get too much power with a studio and there is no one to tell you no, you get beautiful but bloated movies that severely need a grown up's guiding hand to reel in the artist

Hands down favorite film. I quote it all the time subtly...rarely does anyone ever pick up on it. Incredibly underrated, somehow. The film that made me want to write movies.

Everyone talks about hopper Walken and Oldman and rightfully so but this movie's second half was really carried by Bronson Pinchot and Saul Rubinek's performances. Them along with Sizemore and Chris Penns cop buddy act was pure gold in every scene.

Had Tarantino directed it, the ending would have been (much) different.
Top 5 flick for me. Had his initial script's ending actually happened, I always wonder if I'd love this movie just as much.

Care to expand on that?

Clarence died in the original script.

Exactly. Alabama takes the money and raises their kid. But Clarence is killed in the shoot out. Scott opted for the happy ending.
