I'd do it. Work. Eat well. Workout. Xbox. Travel around the region. Seems like a good time.

A friend of mine went to Abu Dhabi for work at about your age and has found himself living/working in Dubai shortly thereafter. (Been there ~5 years)

He's still there. Pretty seriously dating some girl from Europe for a while now.

He said the idea is this:

"You go over there with two buckets. One of them is for bullshite and the other is for money. If either bucket starts getting full, it's time to get the hell out."

Dubai is loaded with Russian millionaire billionaire daughters living the good (non-prostitution) life. Find one of those, learn Russian, and profit!

Also I think there are a fair amount of young professional singles there.

Yeah, great advice from other people. U do know, that they enforce their laws there.

You should go read about the things people have been arrested for in the country, before even thinking about it.

It might look like an Oasis, but Sharia Law and Islamic is enforced. They do not F around.

Don't make any BIG purchases over there, like something you have to finance...debt is punishable by prison, and for tourists, there's a fine line between slow-pay and jail.

Friends have told me that the gold sold in the duty-free airport shops is a good investment, but US customs won't let you claim more than $10K upon return. So they make their friends wear as much as they can, only have to claim what they have packed.

At 27? Eehhhh... I noticed a big change in my mindset at the turn of 30. You seem to already be thinking about establishing a true social life and potentially finding a long term partner. You might find yourself pushing mid thirties with lots of money as you return to the states but feeling like you're starting all over again when most of your peer group has settled into their own lives.

This is my biggest fear summed up perfectly. Really wish it was like 2-3 years. I know 5 isn't an eternity, but it's quite a while given the timing.

Looking for some input from folks on a potential relocation. I just got notified that I am in consideration for a pretty substantial promotion (not so subtle brag), but it would require me to relocate to Dubai for about five years.

I've been told it can be fairly lonely for folks who go there solo. Most folks I've talked to say that outside of paying for prostitutes, there's not much in the way of a social life. I'm only 27 so not desperate to lock something up, but I also don't know how I feel about pay for flesh relationships-only for the next five years.

Any other advice folks might have to give. I've lived in Europe and Australia so I'm comfortable being abroad, but I've never done the Middle East. I'm a pretty laid-back, casual person so I am worried I might not be the best fit for this culture.

Any input is greatly appreciated! TIA!

I have friends that live in Dubai. They work at the university. They love it. They live in the high-rise above the clouds. They have a boat they use on the weekends and are pretty laid back.

I would NOT hire a prostitute.

lived there for about two years (2014 and 2015)

make sure your relocation includes a substantial housing allowance, or your company will pay for your housing - this is a must, housing is expensive there. check dubai.dubizzle.com for an idea - a 1 bedroom apt in the marina is about $23,000 a year in rent

consider your bills as well. electricity in dubai can be expensive. we lived in a small townhouse and electric bill in summer can be $500 easy.

you can get around with cabs/uber, but it adds up quick, so you'll need to buy a car or consider shipping yours over. dubizzle has a lot of used cars on there as well.

food and drink in general is more expensive. be ready to pay $10 for a pint of fosters (crappy beer) at most bars you go to.

emirates is a fantastic airline. you can get tons of direct flights to all over the world. living in dubai will afford you the opportunity to see a lot of the world.

most of the population is from india, pakistan, and filipinos, you'll probably interact very little with emiratis.

lots of brits, australians, south africans, and russians there. not many americans.

let me know if you want any other info.

What kind of work you in? does it allow you say a few weeks on then a few off? If its a 9-5 gig 5 days a week and you only get like 10 days vacation a year then "No". If you get a few weeks off at a time then "Yes" you could go to europe, asia etc.. every other month to break up the boredom. It's your choice though. good luck!

Unless this pay increase is approaching $200,000, I would not do it.

You are basically looking at 5 years of an extreme light amount of sex. Watching US sports will be difficult, communication with friends and family in the US will be difficult.

Living in Europe and Australia does not prepare you for the Middle East, those are places are similar to life in the USA.

Never been to Dubai or have any desire to due to its sickening underbelly, but if you do, there are lots of Americans and Europeans living there. Plenty of groups to meet up with and unlike other countries out in those shite stained rocks, they have bars and all that.

Not sure about the number of single women and how it would compare to Asia and Europe since you probably wouldn't want any part of the actual population there. I would be apprehensive on sending a daughter there, but not necessarily a son which is why I could see it being a sausage fest.

Do you like massive social stratification? Because living there for five years would make it very, very visible.

That is definitely not the only country that does that. They may spare you the Westerner, but they'd kill the prostitute almost certainly in most Arab countries. They have little tolerance for it and really anything that questions the community and faith at large. If a man walked into a mosque in Gaza and said "hey I've decided to become Presbyterian" then he'd be killed for it.

You'll get over the sports, but this can't be emphasized enough when you're living halfway around the world. You don't really fathom it until you're there, but you are communicating with people back at home with a completely different mindset. It's either morning for you and evening for them or vice versa. It's astounding how much the tone of the conversation changes.

Not only that, but prepare for drunk calls from friends back at home and for you to do the same. That's when people really want to talk, but while it's 1:00 in the morning for them, it's 3:00 in the afternoon for you.

$200k would be my bare minimum to even start considering it. After living in Kuwait, Jordan, and Turkey I've had my damn fill of the middle east. It would take a metric shite-ton of cash to get me to work even in Dubai, which is one of the nicer areas in that region.

Big difference between 6 months and 5 years. 6 months things are still exotic. Years though you start to see how deep down how fricked up their societies are, and Dubai is an absolute doozy. It would take a lot for me to go there.

What kind of realistic pay and savings are we talking about do kind of work move? We talking $80k to $150k with the ability to save $50k+ a year? The only reason to do it is if it made a great career move, you could save up a ton of money (like buy a house in cash money), and could be mostly enjoyable.

Doesn't make sense to go there for a $80k to $120k salary only to need to spend most of that for a higher cost of living and travel.

As someone who's done a lot of work in the Middle East, don't do it
