Thoughts on children's auto-inflate life jackets.

I have a four year old little boy that loves to go on our party barge. He usually doesn't have a problem wearing his "float coat" but I know it gets hot later in the summer. I have been looking for him an auto inflate type but it is hard to find one coast gaurd approved in his size. They have some that are approved by other agencies. What are yalls thoughts?

I think anything that will encourage an individual to keep a life preserver on while on the water is a good thing.

Foam filled life vest float. Simple.
Automatic life vest can fail. Simple.
I would never put my child into a auto vest while boating. Fishing on a dock or something similar, sure.

my boys.....just the foam filled vest....no telling what can happen and that way I take a possible negative factor out of the equation.

Mine would be wet within 10 minutes of putting it on then it self inflates and you are back to your original predicament. Stick with the simple.

Stick with the standard USCGA vest. Just make sure you have a good one that's comfortable for him to wear all day and not a nylon covered one size fits all in kids size. Those will get hot. My son is on the water all day most days of the summer and always has a jacket on. If it gets hot, let him get wet.

I may be wrong, but I though the auto inflate were not coast guard approved for children.

ShawnLSU, you are wrong they are USCG approved. And yes kids below about 11 or 12 should have the nicer and safer neoprene style lifejackets. those bright orange foam filled or a damn choke safety hazard. Stay away and get a solid vest.

inflatables are not legal for kids under 16

I don't think the USCG approved them for children. I bought my boys the mustang survival little legends series and they don't seem to mind. ALso the neoprene type pfd's seem less bulky and softer on the skin.

would never put my child in one. They have proven to sometimes fail. I don't care if 1 in a million failed, thats all i need to know.

I know they are, but if you would read the entire post I said "for children" and it looks like I was correct.
