dude cars all over the road right now have the technology to stop themselves if something suddenly appears in front of them like a branch. Asking what will a driverless car do in the event of a fallen branch has been answered years ago

I still believe this is many years away. Seems really cool thou. I have a long commute to work, so this would be awesome for people like me. I can just nap, jerk off, or read instead of driving

I'll bet this is happening in New York and it's just an excuse to take away people's rights to drive. There gonna make it illegal to own a gun or a truck. frick these people.

For people that don't like to fly, this would be awesome. Road trips where you can basically be hanging out with family, watching tv, cooking, etc.

Uhhh no, WALL-E is about complete laziness and sloth. If you're taking a road trip with family, you'd be driving and sitting anyway. Why not be comfortable?

That's the point though. They aren't anywhere CLOSE to being ready. They can only operate under perfect conditions.
If it's not a bright sunny day and the road isn't nice and flat with bright perfect paint lines it can't tell what the hell is going on.

And they get that shite wrong all the time. I've ridden in multiple cars with that tech and I usually turn it off b/c it tends to try to stop when it doesn't need to. If you ever drive through a construction area that has one of those big metal sheets on the ground to cover a hole it freaks out. If you are in stop and go traffic in a city it will freak out and hit the breaks when it doesn't need to. Screw having it on when it's icy out too.
This shite isn't close to ready for full autonomous driving. It's going to take long time for it to be any kind of actual safe b/c they straight up can't handle conditions that are less than perfect.

thats such BS. The self driving cars on the road today have an excellent safety record. people wreck all the time despite perfect conditions.

At best autonomous driving will handle highway slogs. It can't and won't fully replace drivers in most of our lifetimes. What it can do is keep us comfortable while our commute times lengthen and increase the productivity of long haul truck drivers.
It's different for pickups, Suburbans, and Jeeps.....autonomous research depends on the autonomous vehicle fleets recognizing and "learning" road surfaces and markings. It will likely never handle the type of use that a lot of these purpose built trucks see, such as jaunts through a pasture, backing into a boat ramp, stop and go moving on a job site or in an urban area, or heavy off roading.
If the cars can talk to each other on the road we can actually put them much closer together and better utilize our existing highway infrastructure. They can accelerate, steer, and brake as a group and basically bumper lock each other and let other cars come into or out of the lane.
Imagine a group of Teslas in autonomous mode traveling down the highway. If they are networked, they can get much closer together and basically draft each other safely. You can actually fit more cars on the highway in that case.

Where's the guy on here that says we shouldn't have safer highways because we need the fatalities for organ harvesting, therefore we don't need driverless cars?!
