Was on empty...Gas pump had green handle..12 gallons in..drove 1 mile and it died. Realized what I had done and had it towed...Fuel lime blown out, tank drained, fuel filter changed...how likely is it I will have issues in the future because of this stupid mistake?

Probably none. If it runs fine now then you didn't hurt anything.

gas in a diesel isn't as bad in the long run as diesel in a gas engine.

What gas station does this? Remind me not to go to them.

Beware the Green Pump Handles at BP
Take it from me...use text word "diesel" , not handle color.

I'm guessing he's fully aware of that now.

I have done the exact same thing. Those stations that have the green gas handles should be burned to the ground.
I had no issues after draining the system.

Putting gas in a Diesel is a lot worse than putting diesel through a gas engine. Gas does not have the lubricating properties that diesel fuel does.

Always heard to use some injector lubricant type additive stuff for this very problem.

My uncle had a brand new dodge diesel in 1998. hadn't even paid the first note on it and my aunt took it somewhere. wanted to help my uncle out and fill it up. filled it to the top with gas. Got about a block down the road and it locked up. They got it all cleaned out and he got about 400k miles out of it, but he said it was never the same as the first 6 weeks he owned it.

Wrong

Nothing else you could do about it now. Any damage that would have been done is done. Since gas doesn't lubricate like diesel, it can damage the high pressure pump and possibly injectors. Drive it until something acts up then address it

I put a couple gallons of gas in mine about every 3rd or 4th tank

That's a TERRIBLE idea these days.

So far it ain't hurt a damn thang. 74k miles on a 2014 350

That's more of an "it depends" really. Modern automotive diesels on ULSD are already built to be less dependant on the fuel's lubricity. Diesel in a gas engine is mixing in something with about a 30 octane rating into a system designed for at least 87. A gas engine can lunch a piston while a diesel will usually shut down before any real damage occurs. Mixing small amounts of gas into a diesel can cause more issues than mixing a little diesel into a gasser if given enough time though.

It's even worse on a high pressure common rail engine.
You can't get the old slippery high sulphuric diesel anymore. ULSD has shite lubricity and putting gas in it makes it much worse.
Keep doing that and you'll wipe the fuel system on that truck prematurely. The new bosche stuff that I fool with has hardened guts to deal with running on kerosene and jet fuel and other shitty fuels, but you still shouldn't temp fate on an $8k fuel system.
It's not like the old days with open nozzle injectors and PT pumps.

This is a very conservative number. My buddy was a Ford diesel tech and a complete fuel system replacement runs about 12 grand. I imagine the similar Bosch systems in the GM vehicles would cost about the same amount.

I actually know two other people who did exactly the same thing, both at BP stations.
there is no long term effect at all from doing it...mainly, you are just out the $ that it took to do the work as well as the bucks that the gasoline cost.
