Is this true? It seems like I remember reading this somewhere but I have not been able to find a link. If someone can post a link showing the stats I would appreciate it.

Not in my household I don't.

If I recall correctly from looking at the federal budget breakdown, last year we spent $60 billion on the EITC.

I did a couple of years before I got married and got a much better job. Based on my experience working in the service industry that number sounds plausible.

A downvote for stating a fact? I have a stalker.

I had heard close 40% paid zero or negative taxes. That may not be accurate though.

Take it as a compliment. You're so up in someone's head that they follow you around just to anonymously downvote your posts. Kinda sad for them though.

I'm no math major but damn, that's a lot of people voting themselves more benefits without paying into the system.

You know the fact that a third of American pay negative income tax and close to half pay no income tax (inclusive of first group) wouldn't necessarily bother me so much, if those very people didn't cry bitch and whine about how much others pay (as in not enough) and claim the burden is on them. Its pathetic and politicians cater to it.

I had no idea this was even possible until a few years back I worked with a guy(who had a pretty good job) but has 3 kids and his wife didn't work; and he told me he was getting back more than he paid in. I was utterly shocked.
I can see getting all your money back if you're poor and really need it, but don't give them my money too.

LINK
Its called the earned income credit. Its a giveaway program that is in theory supposed to raise those up that are in poverty. In reality it rewards people to stay single so that they can qualify for their Christmas in February bonus.
If I get a refund from the state I have to pay fricking taxes on it the next year.

During the 2015 tax year, the average EITC was $3,186 for a family with children (boosting wages by about $265 a month), compared with just $293 for a family without children.
